i think earthquakes are particularly relevant, in a chilly way, given the position of our country viz a viz plates, and the immense density of people and structures in Dhaka.

I hear earthquakes often happen at dawn, any reason why so ?

Anything over 6.0 and Dhaka will be the graveyard for millions. I hope the good people of Bangladesh continue to pray and delay the inevitable, now overdue for centuries.

Ritzy, overpriced places built on landfill by criminal brigands masquerading as real estate developers who believe polapainre Scholastica, ISD ar BIT-te pathya ar SUV chalaya jate utha jay ba size lukano jay, would be the first ones to go. The fokls who buy these apartments are the bigger idiots. No sympathy for them. Divine justice will not spare any of us.

I've also been noticing this increased frequency of earthquakes. It's so scary...Dhaka will be shattered if they're hit with a 6+ earthquake.

I'm really scared. Hope our 2-storeyed house isn't going to pose much threat for a major disaster. Allah save us.

actually the number of earthquake this year so far is less than years before at this point. its cause of the haiti earthquake i believe more attention is being paid to them.

Source? That cant be right...

Unless you mean there have been specific years in the past in which more people have died up to this point. Big difference of course...

Thats interesting. I would have thought the difference would be a bit larger.

Even so, the number of significant earthquakes this year aren't in fact lower than the average up to this point. Its slightly higher than the average actually. I remember reading about it on Newsweek just yesterday as a matter of fact. I'll dig up the link if i can find it within the next couple of minutes. Still, interesting point about how the difference isn't as large as one would think. I think the article I read was making the same argument...

we are agreeing right?

what I am saying is earthquakes are the same...just more people dying. i was misinformed about being lower than average thing. but in the end its roughly the same.

Timely thread. (although it boggles my mind why does every thread needs the word 'thread' in it.. couldnt make it sound geekier). Recent one was in China. Jewel Aich bhai if you could may be collect links to all the earthquakes that happened recently. And it's funny we were talking today how Haiti got all the attention because it's so poverty stricken yet Chile and Turkey was 'forgotten.'

Allah save us....i am living in perpetual fear that any moment Bangladesh is going to encounter with a massive earthquake. I dont really know whether the number has decreased so far compared to the past years, but the magnitudes of all the earthquakes are quite high....first in Haiti, then Chile, Turkey and now China. So far 1100 people have died according to the Chinese. Let us all pray that this dreadful calamity doesnt attack Bangladesh.

The number of high magnitude earthquakes are just slightly higher than usual as Bancans link shows. These minor variations have been quite common throughout history and don't denote a trend of any sort. Earthquakes like those in China and Turkey happen every year.

The magnitude in the Haiti earthquake wasn't particularly high, but it does go to show you much the placement of the epicenter matters... You're right, it is scary to think what might happen if the same kind of thing happens in Bangladesh. But, if its any consolation, seven earthquakes (with magnitudes higher than that in Haiti) have already struck Bangladesh in the last 150 years, two with epicenters within the country, and none are within the top 15 death tolls...
