Post of the Month: For the Members by the Members
Executive Summary:
This Thread proposes creation of a system to promote quality posting by “Post of the Month” recognition. Members will nominate post whenever they find something interesting and of high quality—nominate as many you want and whenever you want. At the end of the month, some volunteer members will go though the nomination and find the highest nominated post for “Post of the Month” recognition.
Background:
Many of our forum members voiced their concern over the downward quality of the posts and threads posted in recent times. Also the post count based ranking often motivates newcomers to engage in hyper-posting just to raise post numbers.
As a positive counter measure to motivate members to concentrate on quality over quantity and to encourage thoughtful quality posting, we may think about a quality recognition system such as “Post of the Month” or may be even “Post of the Week”.
So I would like to propose the following member-managed system which may promote quality posting and at the same time will not create any burden on the already overworked moderators/administrators. Ofcourse, it will need some assistance from the admin to officially publish the winning posts.
Process of Recognition:
There will be a permanent “Post of the Month/Week” thread in one of the most visited sub-forums for the members to nominate the posts they would like to recognize. At the end of the month or week, we will ask couple of members to volunteer to go though and count the nominations. It can be a simple continuous team-work process such as “Hey Buddy, you review the first 20 nominations and I’ll do the next 20”!!
Whenever a member finds a high quality post, he/she may report it for nomination. There will be no limit for nomination-- members will be able to nominate as many posts as they want. Also, members will not have to wait till the end of the month/week to nominate posts-- they may nominate posts as they go though the forum and whenever they find something they like.
How to Nominate a Post:
Here is how members can nominate posts for quality recognition:
1. Click on the Post number of the post they want to nominate
2. Copy the URL of the popped up View Single Post window
3. Post the Copied URL in the permanent “Post of the Month/Week” thread.
How to Select the Winning Post:
The post which gets highest number of nomination wins. Or alternatively we may think about qualitative judgment by a judge panel. Later, with help from the admin, a closed Sticky thread will be created and this will contain only the award winning posts.
Do you guys think this is something worth doing?
If so, do you have any suggestion for creating an efficient system?

Post of the month. definitely! Post of the week, very hard. We can start with Post of the month. They if we think things are going well we can manage bi-weekly or weekly we can incorporate that. (For some week starts on Saturday, for some week starts on Monday but for all, month starts on the 1st)
Option one: We may need a Mods help. Only he/they can post on that thread each week/month. They would copy paste that post with dates.
All other congratulation posts need to be in another thread in order to keep the post count to a managable and people not having hard time to find the special posts for each month. There should be a link to the congratulation thread from the original post of the month/week thread.
Option two: Another thought, May be we can create a new sub-forum all together. Then we don't have to have mods involvement. And all congratulation posts can be with the same weekly/monthly threads.
I would volunteer to be one of the judges for the first month/week.

I concur with the idea only if the jury promises to rig the votes in my favour every week or every month whichever format you decide to follow. Otherwise I am not interested.

Guilty as charged. As punishment you can be my assistant/peer to chose the post of the month (semi-judge). Thus you could not qualify to be the chosen one as long as you hold the post.
Judge Tiger:
nominates Babubhai's "chotoder shohoj cricket odhinaokotto chikkha" - no brainer.

Isn't there a rating system already in place for the forum threads?
Here's another idea: you could have 5 stars sitting horizontally right next to each post no (#n). Other posers can hover their mouse over and rate.
Much like youtube rating or any other site with rating facility. The rating score can be displayed the similar way, next to the stars as you have enough space to accommodate it. And of course the poster can't rate his/her own post.
For this to happen, the forum technical staffs would have to resort to Ajax as you don't want to rate and refresh the page at the same time. I just think this could a be better solution but it requires a bit more time and effort and not to mention digging into heaps of code.

In the end it is all a popularity contest - pat your own back. Quality takes a back seat to pleasing the hoi polloi.
