Cricket IQ
Got the idea from an Indian cricket book where they present you with a hypothetical situation and you have to guess the outcome. So this is mainly to increase our cricket IQ. One will give a situation with the real outcome in mind and others will guess it. Sources can be found at cricinfo match archives or youtube.
Situation: Last ball remaining. 5 to win. 2 wickets in hand. 1 dot ball to bowl for you to bowl. Your opponent, a right-handed batsman scored a fifty in this match and hit couple of boundaries in this last over off you. A wicket fell but it was a run-out. Powerplay overs are already over. All the fielders at the boundary rope. Your turn to bowl.
Positive: Last ball, five to win, odds are for you. And one of your teammate bowler scored a hattrick for your team so that pretty much got the whole team rocked and riled up.
Negative: You are away. You got the homecrowd advantage going against you. Your opponent scored a six and a four in this over midwicket.
Question: What kind of ball you DON'T bowl?
a. full b. reverse swing c. yorker or into the blockhole d. bouncer

Okay I messed up in the forming the answers. You are correct any good batsman can hook or pull a bouncer over the boundary. Anyway, the "correct" answer was full and that is precisely what Mashrafe did by bowling to Taylor being treated for a last ball six over midwicket in Harare on August 2nd, 2006. Here is the Bulletin.
Coming up with a better example... Ro, we are stoked to have you participating! We just need Orphy and goru to keep the wheel grinding!

I think the answer depends on the batsmen.

Situation: 3 runs needed from 1 ball. 3 wickets in hand. You are a right arm fast bowler. Your opponent is a handed batsman. Your opponent scored a fifty in this over. You are playing in the world cup in a neutral venue. You gave already gave away 9 in this over. Your job is to prevent a boundary. Powerplays are off and fielders are at the boundary. What kind of bowl do you deliver that provide you with the maximum chance of winning?
a. bouncer b. pitch it near good length c. experiment with slower ball d. try an inswinger

It depends on what the batsman is good at playing.. But bowling full is just dumb, because full is the easiest ball to pick and hit, and you dont need power, you just need strength to hit a full ball..
And for the second question its an inswinger

for 2nd question I'd go for C. Experiment with slower ball....coz I don't think the batsman will be expecting that to be the deciding ball of a match.Besides, when your team is depending on you to win the match for u, u will get restless (which should be happening to the batsman) so he will want to hit the ball as fast as he can to get it over with.

Good length of course. When you are in that situation, you have to trust yourself and your bowling. No need to do any type of experimenting. If you bowl an inswinger, you may stray (like many of our bowlers) and then either be called for a wide or the batsmen could easily flick it off his legs for a gimmie 4. Line and length is always the answer. If a batsmen can pick the gap with a ball at good line and length, then all you can do is tip your cap.

Experimenting in last ball will cause one to err more in line and length.

Okay I burnt midnight oil to bring this bumper special just for you guys. I will give you 10 pitch reports and you try to guess the 'right' answer. You are the captain and you won the toss. Do you bat or bowl first? By right answer I mean what would most captains opt for that situation.
Quote:
1. That there are cracks on the turf. Apparently, according to experts, there is moisture in the air and on the pitch. It could offer variable bounce.
2. The pitch for is same pitch that had been used for 4 other matches earlier in the tournament; there is some wear and tear and it is expected to play slow.
3. There is a lot of grass on the track albeit dry. The curator says that "the ball will carry through to the batsmen and seamers will be able to extract height, though it might be tough for the spinners as the ball may skid."
4. Its dry and hard, but the curator says there will be good bounce and carry, with the pitch slowing down later in the day. Its a humid day, and word is that the dew will not be a factor.
5. A typical subcontinent pitch that is dry and hard. There's but a smattering of green on the pitch.
6. Seems to be fairly cool conditions out in the middle, with a maximum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius. Its cloudy but dry at the moment and the field, reportedly, was rather damp and the covers were on for most of the morning. Given the recent rain, and the heavy cloud cover, one would expect the pitch to be slower. There's no sun out right now and the surface is hard, and there's the chance a few deliveries may stay a little low.
7. It's a sunny day... for the moment at least. There was heavy rain last night though. The forecast is for scattered showers. The pitch has some moisture and there will be something for the new-ball bowlers. After that wears off, however, it'll settle down and be good for batting.
8. There is not much green grass on the track. It looks a pretty firm one.
9. Test match. The surface today has an even covering of grass and appears quite hard. The first hour of play will be the best for the seamers and if the sun stays out, the batsmen should enjoy themselves. It could however get slower and lower as the Test progresses.
10. Test match. The conditions are overcast. The pitch is hard and has a live covering of grass so the ball should skid through early on.
