West Indies in Bangladesh, 2011

Bulletin

Bangladesh edges the West Indies in a thrilling victory in the only T20 International

Newly minted captain Mushfiqur Rahman began his stint auspiciously as he led from the front with an unbeaten 41 from 26 balls to give Bangladesh a thrilling three-wicket victory over the West Indies on Tuesday. Mushfiqur's 6 off the penultimate ball gave Bangladesh a win that ended a 12-match losing streak in T20 Internationals and marked the first win at home against the West Indies.

Earlier, the West Indies had posted a modest 133-run target. Put on to bat, they were in a great position at 61-1 in the ninth over but SLAs Shakib al Hassan and Abdur Razzak began the slide as they bagged two wickets apiece. Marlon Samuels was the only West Indies batsmen to take the fight to the spinners with a 42-ball 58 but received no support from his team-mates. Pacer Shafiul Islam polished off the West Indies innings with 2 wickets in the last over while the remaining wickets were bagged by off-spinner Naeem Islam and seamer Rubel Hossain with one each.

In their chase, Bangladesh were struggling at 93-6 until Mushfiqur Rahim steadied the innings with a vital 35-run seventh wicket stand Nasir Hossain. The debutant contributed a valuable 15-ball 18. Bangladesh needed 20 runs in the last 2 overs but a 14 run 19th over eased the pressure. Needing 4 off the last 2 balls, Mushfiqur dispatched Ravi Rampaul for a huge 6 over mid-wicket and Bangladesh was home.

The two teams will now play a three-match ODI series, starting in Dhaka on Thursday.
