Default Ancestry? Genealogy? And the likes of 23 and me.. What's your thought?

Hey.

Related theme.

First ancestry. I am from "Mir" family and I would be very curious to see if it runs to Mir Jafar or for that matter a better and prominent family. I know my family origins from Comilla (Kumillah?) and there is actually a Facebook group but I wonder if any one has done any searches of their lineage via these sites.

On a different note, what y'all think of 23 and me? Suppose you do it and find you will have a weird and deadly genetic disease coming.. lol sorry... would you be able to live with that? Or wanna play it blind?

Any experiences?

I know Shamim Chowdhury turned out to be a Scottish family (or Wales I think) thanks to the clue in the emblazoned heraldic emblems.. but hey that is of a different matter.

What is this Mir family and how do you know you are from there . In bangaldesh children are named randomly with famous ppl and family without actually having any lineage .

Even the most powerful family in our country ... Mujib family is not really sheikh but everyone from that family has sheik in their name . It's a borrowed name. And I find it embarrassing . They should have changed their name to have mujeeb instead (creating that starting point lineage recognition ). .or can further study their roots . I am writing this obvously without studying their roots but the name sheikh is borrowed it looks like.

Queen Elizabeth of England is a descendent of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) [obviously from his daughter's side since all his sons died at young age].

Lol cuz my name says so. But I know about 5 nodes up who form the ancestry of my lineage - legit- who have the "Mir" in the title. I am curious as if it branched out from anywhere.

So going back to main topic, I don't think ancestry(dot)com can help us who are A-rabs, huh?

Very interesting thread.

Anyone know where the Miah family came from? Like the routes?

Or where the surname first originated from?

Miah/Mian was a surname originally given to some clans by the Mughals. In punjab it is Mian and in Bengal it is Miah. It is a very common Sylethi surname.

Surnames in Bangladesh are very tricky and has few historical context. Traditionally, we don't carry on the last name like people in the west do. In fact, even Indians/Pakistanis have carried on their surnames as they were more clan and caste based. Yes, even some North Indians and Pakistani Muslims have strict caste based lineages. Plus they have a lot of ethnic groups that came from Central Asia/Turkic regions and thus people naturally carried on their surnames. For example, Afghanis/Pashtuns are very tribal based. Surnames like Zazai, Afridi, Naib are name of their tribes.

But we do not have such clan or caste based practice. Bengalis (in general) are a extremely homogeneous group. There were some foreign influence but it is very minimal.

Look at the BD team, it is full of Hassan and Hossains. I have 5 uncles and each of them has different last names haha.

It is same - Mia is supposed to be pronounced with a nasal sound at the end - in Bangla this is denoted with a chondro-bindu. Over time, it evolved to 'n' in some languages.

Other examples: তেজগাঁও in English it is Tejgaon.

Kha (খাঁ) is same as Khan
