BCB to Appoint Thilan Samaraweera As Batting Consultant
Another very good move by BCB. Although this seems to be a short term stint of 45 days, i think this more than enough time to work on the technical side of our batsmen. And Hathurusingha being a former teammate of Samaraweera would be able to direct him on the specific areas to work with.
Not exactly a glamorous cricketer during his days, but he was a perfectionist and a hard worker. Known very much for his technique and temperament. Lot of county experience too. This move will pay dividends.

Must be good for Australia to consider him for the same position. Anyone got anymore anything else on his coaching credential?

So we have a fielding and bowling coach but never had a specialist long term batting coach yet.
Need to find one. Heard Siddons and Law are interested

I think all we need now is a spin coach... our spin bowling has gone down and it has to be revived to become a strong force in every format

In Aussie he was coaching Under 19 and 16 batsmen in Victoria. After that some club as an assistant coach. Eventually he moved to Brisbane to coach at their version of High Performance Academy and has been coaching emerging players. Recently before SL tour, some Aussie senior team batsmen came to work with him on how to play spin.
As a coach maybe has about 2-3 years experience-that too at very junior level.
This ll probably his first major assignment. I think most of our batsmen have improved under Hathurusinghe, but this guy will definitely look at nitty gritty details and look to fine tune technique. Likes of Soumya, Shakib, Mushfiq, Nasir etc need to iron out some challenges they ve been having recently.

Spin coach will only help us at the top.
However the real problem lies in the roots. We have very few offies and leggies but a billion SLAs none of whom can turn the ball much

Samaraweera was a very underrated batsman, he was the Lankan Laxman

Umm I'm not excited by his appointment. Aussie batting didn't exactly cover itself in glory in Sri Lanka recently.

Only 3 or 4 Aussie players trained with him got batting tips before SL tour. But the fact that the Aussies are utilizing him-means they see sth. He ll probably work 50 days a year.
BCB mentioned there will be another batting coach from Australia. Long time ago we were linked to Michael Bevan as part time batting coach. That could be a great move, because running between the wickets, converting 1's to 2's, quick singles-still a major weakness for us.

I think its a good move for a short term, better than not having any batting coach around beside the players.

Is there anyone else who thinks
Coaches should be for Academy and High Performance..
National team is not the place for coaching?

For Australia/India - maybe (A BIG maybe) but for us - definitely need coaches!! You have seen what a difference a good coach can make.

Thats a very correct assessment.
Most new players selected for the team come in as unfinished products. And because of absence of proper domestic cricket and teams, even national players rarely work on their skills outside national camps.
But in an ideal situation, such coaches should be working on skills of players before entering the national team.

Only 45 days for a batting consultant.
I think this is a smart move.

Very true.
But i d say 60-70% issue is psychological. Lose shots, unforced errors, carelessness, recklessness, bowing down to pressure.
We might need a batting coach who can work on the mental side-teach them how to plan an innings, give them targets, have strict rules on what shot to play, what not.
Really frustrated with the batting this and Afghanistan series. Not that they cant, they are just reckless.

So is it thilan's fault that Nasir, Tamim and Riad couldn't play short ball / full tosses?
No coach can fix a player who pokes the full toss ball to short midwicket or dab a short ball onto short cover.

Make assessment after test series. 45 Days is not enough for Bangladesh(It makes very little difference since he just got in and most of the Dismissals barring a couple were due to judgement errors)

Bye bye. There is a reason why SL LOI batting is suffering atm.
This guy never was a LOI specialist. I can understand hiring him for test but for ODI's? He never been odi material. Then again you can't have two batting coaches. So better hire someone who is knows the modern day batting. We need a week of advice from Sachin Tendulkar. Our players have the talents and the ability but mentally they lose it especially when one goes, many follow in quickly.
How about Stuart Law for batting consultant?
