Default Why have we been underperforming in ODIs since 2016?

Watching Pakistan win the Champions Trophy and now Zimbabwe squaring the series and going for a series win in Sri Lanka leads me to ask why we seem to have stagnated in our best format.

It seems like we (both the team and the fans) are still living off what we achieved in 2015 because since then we've only won a series against Afghanistan at home (which was way closer than it should have been), lost at home against England, drew a series against a subpar Sri Lanka team (which seeing how Zim are faring was a series we really should have won) and then had a Champions Trophy campaign which is being painted as a success but really we only won one match and did not even turn up for the other games.

It seems like people aren't really bothered about these results and a lack of progress in general. I know the obvious answer is a lack of series and matches since 2015 but digging a little deeper what are the issues plaguing the team - the coaching, the captaincy, complacency and resting on your laurels or a lack of motivation?

Few issues

Walsh instead of streak

Mustafizur injuries

Rubel injuries

Taskin change of action (not because of test, but rather after he passed it, he changed it), he's transition phase, his run up and more smoother action will prevent injuries

Sarkar loss of form

Sabbir loss of form

Not sorting out number 3 position

2016 more t20 was played than odis

We played abroad mostly not home

Keep losing tosses in 50/50 matches, mash has to have to the worst record amongst captains

But team has not declined overall, but has stagnated a bit

I think there is a tendency to view 2015 as the norm, when those 3 series should really be seen as isolated incidents. That Pak team is not the same team that won the CT. Soumya was on a whole different level against Pak and SA. And then we unleashed Fizz on the Indians. Both players have struggled in 2017.

Also, when you don't play as many series, the randomness of life (and rain) can have a bigger impact on results. We don't know how Game 2 against SL would have turned out. A win there and we win the series. Same goes for the first match against Ireland in the Tri Series. But the same rain saved us against Aus at CT.

Lastly, our team is very consistent at being inconsistent. Game 1 against England at the home series should have been a win. It was a total collapse. If we won that game, we win that series as well and this thread is moot. But that unpredictability is also what helped us beat NZ to reach semis. Flip those and we have a home series win against Eng and an even worse performance in CT. Which is better?

If you take away 2015, you will still see a lot of improvement. If you graph the team's performance, you will see its trending up. It might spike or dip along the way, but overall its rising.

We haven't played too much cricket either. Just bits and pieces series.

We could have won the SLan series if the first game didn't get washed out.

Semi finalist in CT, in a group of Host England (penciled in to win it), Australia, and NZ. In England.

We are #7. You guys think we must be #1 or close to it. Otherwise why this expectation?

If we have under performed (according to some of you), then what did

SA
Australia
NZ
England do?

We have definitely underperformed in 2016/17. We should have won the ODI series against the English. Also, we could have won the match against England in CT given that we were in such a strong position while batting before collapsing in a heap. Again, we should have posted a bigger total against India.

Our batsmen (san Tamim) are underperforming because of lack of professional attitude and self-satisfaction (Sabbir) by some and others being out of form such as S Sarkar. Wonder what the batting coach is there for! Bowling has been on a downward since the departure of Streak. Walsh has been a big failure. He needs to go. Had the experienced Mashrafe not put in some stellar performances recently we would have fared worse. Mustafiz needs to regain his full fitness and speed, revert back to his old action and concentrate on his accurate line and length which has been very poor in recent outings. Hopefully, in home conditions his cutters will be as lethal as before. Yes, batsmen around the world are getting used to him but he has been bowling very poorly lately. Needs to do the basics right.

To me cricket has changed. T20 has had quite an impact on ODI's. 300 is the new 250. Not too long ago you could also choke opposition with tight overs, sth we excelled in with our slow left arm bowlers. Now you have to pick wickets, there is no other way to win.

While cricket and its requirements are slowly changing, we havent adapted as well as we should have. We dont have wicket taking bowlers, we dont have big hitting batsmen.

The problem goes much deeper than Courtney Walsh.
