Kumble steps down as India coach

Anil Kumble has stepped down as India coach, four days before the limited-overs tour of the Caribbean begins. Kumble's one-year contract ran out at the end of the Champions Trophy - India played the final on Sunday - but it was understood that he would remain India's coach for the West Indies tour while the board finalised who would be in charge going forward.

Once the CAC realised the relationship was beyond repair, it asked the BCCI to take the negotiations process forward. "It was not a pleasant meeting," the board official, who has knowledge of Monday's meeting, said. According to this official Kohli remained "adamant" about his stand which might have helped Kumble make up his mind.

"The CAC is likely to have told BCCI that the differences were not cricketing related but more of a personal nature. If he were to stick on, it would be very awkward on Anil's part. It is not good to handle someone as big as Anil in this manner."

Can anybody update me what's going on between Kumble and Kohli? They say its personal not cricket related. They also said Kohli is adamant about his stand? What is his non-cricket related stand that created a conflict between the captain and the coach?

I read somewhere a while ago that Kohli didn't like the way Kumble was coaching them. Referred to him as a "Headmaster".

Kumble is an intelligent individual. I believe he has an engineering degree or something like that.

From the many times that I have seen him during the India games, he is always on the laptop. And on some other occasions, he has a DSLR camera...probably that's a hobby of his.

But he might be a disciplinarian, that which might be against Kohli's philosophy.

This is looking more like Chuck Knoll- Terry Bradshaw relationship.

This could be the first major sit-back for Kohli as well, however, since the rift between team India and Kumble is that significant then its better to get seperate. I also assume there would be some senior player drop out from ODI team soon, such as Dhoni, Yubraj, Jadeja, Ashwin.

I think a lot of you are siding with Kumble based on your dislike for Kohli. But you have to understand that Kohli is not the only person who showed concern towards Kumble, a lot of other players did. All he did was stand up for his players, as a captain which is the right thing.

In this day and age, this "headmaster" type of coaching does not work especially with a team like India and Kumble should have known better. It was just not meant to be.

It will be comical however if Sehwag becomes the next coach.

Kohli and team wins in the short term, but loss for India in the long term.

Kumble has an excellent record in this one year. And he was molding this unit into a well drilled, disciplined unit. I have never seen an Indian team with so much of consistency and grit. Ravi Shastri was being paid close to 100,000 USD a month. Kumble's India is far better than the one Shastri led.

He probably was a tough character, but thats how he is as a person, was as a cricketer-a fighter, fierce competitor. Disciplined, meticulous. I ve seen clips of him in training, works really hard with players. Has been able to address a lot of their weaknesses.

Big loss. Probably Tom Moody is a probable candidate. But can he work with Kohli, or will have to suck up to him to keep his job?

Nothing will happen because Kumble left. I remember India didn't even have a coach and only had Ravi Shastri as a makeshift manager. The Indian team is where it is because of the players. While we need a head master like coach telling people what to do all the time, these guys don't.

Kohli will train hard and demand the same from team mates with or without the advice of Kumble. The main thing is to get the strategy right and for that there are plenty of candidates that could do the coaching job. Kohli also has Dhoni to bank on for advice.

I guess we ll find out Jadukor. I thought they were very efficient and effective under Kumble. Lean, mean, well drilled.

Tom Moody might be good for them. But eitherway, doesnt send a good signal if a player can have so much of influence to be able to dictate a coach's tenure. See Gavaskar interview.

Yes... I agree with the folks who thinks long term it cannot be good for the team. There is reason why a team needs head coach.

It will all depend how long Kohli and the performs.... when/if they stop performing....Kohli will take all the heat.

Opened a poll at ICF to see who Indian fans are supporting: Kohli or Kumble. Anil has been the clear winner per the poll result. Some even called Kohli childish because he deleted a tweet from one year ago that congratulated Kumble's appointment, and how he was so happy. Lol.
