টেলিগ্রাফকে আইসিসির প্রধান নির্বাহী ডেভ রিচার্ডসন বলেছেন, ক্রিকেট বিশ্বে এই দ্বৈরথের গুরুত্বের কারণেই আইসিসি চেষ্টা করে দুই দলকে একই গ্রুপে রাখতে, ‘কোনো সন্দেহ নেই আমরা চেষ্টা করি আমাদের টুর্নামেন্টগুলো� �ে ভারত বনাম পাকিস্তান ম্যাচ রাখার। আইসিসির দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে এটা খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। ক্রিকেট বিশ্বেও এটা অনেক বড় একটা ম্যাচ, সমর্থকেরাও আশা করে এই ম্যাচের। চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফির জন্যও এটা হবে দুর্দান্ত কিছু, দারুণভাবে শুরু।’
চ্যাম্পিয়নস ট্রফি, বিশ্বকাপ, ওয়ার্ল্ড টি-টোয়েন্টির মতো আইসিসির বড় টুর্নামেন্টগুলো� �ে ভারত-পাকিস্তান ম্যাচ কখনো কখনো টিভি দর্শকসংখ্যায় ১০০ কোটিও ছাড়িয়ে যায়। অনেক দিন ধরেই কানাঘুষা হচ্ছিল, দর্শক ও টিভির কথা মাথায় রেখেই আইসিসি গ্রুপের ড্রটা ইচ্ছে করেই এভাবে সাজায়। তবে এই প্রথম আইসিসির পক্ষ থেকে বিষয়টি স্বীকার করে নেওয়া হলো।
কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে, ড্র হওয়ার কথা লটারি করে; এতে করে নিরপেক্ষ ও ‘লেভেল প্লেয়িং ফিল্ড’ নিশ্চিত হয়। ভারত-পাকিস্তানকে এ গ্রুপে রাখতে ​গিয়ে অন্য গ্রুপগুলোতেও তো এর প্রভাব পড়ে। যেমন এবার বাংলাদেশ পড়েছে খুবই কঠিন এক গ্রুপে। আইসিসি নিজের স্বার্থের কথা ভেবে এমনটা কি করতে পারে? এটা কি টুর্নামেন্টের সততার প্রশ্ন নয়?
রিচার্ডসন কিন্তু তা মনে করেন না, ‘আমরা যখন গ্রুপ সাজাই, তখন এটা নিশ্চিত করি, প্রতিটি গ্রুপ যেন ​র‍্যা​ঙ্কিংয়ের ভিত্তিতেই হয়, সব গ্রুপেই সমান র‍্যাঙ্কিংয়ে পয়েন্টের দলগুলো থাকে। এটা নানাভাবে করা যায়। তাই এভাবে ভারসাম্য রেখে গ্রুপগুলো সাজিয়ে এই লড়াইটাও (ভারত বনাম পাকিস্তান) রাখা যখন সম্ভব হচ্ছে, তখন সেটা না রাখাই তো বোকা​মি।’

England at home won't be easy by any means and NZ always do well in ICC tournaments. But still I like this group a lot. If we manage to qualify from a group that has so many tough opponents who are more suited to the condition over there, that will boost our confidence and speak volumes of our improvement. Also, thankfully we won't have to see the typical drama in the group stage as we are not facing against India.
