Symcox to captain opener against Bangladesh

Pat Symcox will captain the Nicky Oppenheimer XI against the touring Bangladesh cricket team in Randjesfontein on Friday, the United Cricket Board announced on Wednesday.

The team, also includes national players, Daryll Cullinan and Adam Bacher, both of the Highveld Strikers. Cullinan inparticular is trying to force his way back into the national squad.

Enoch Nkwe, who became the youngest player to score a century for the Strikers on his first-class debut last weekend, was also named in the starting XI.

Bangladeshi's set for a rough ride

"They've come to collect their whipping," was the rather crude remark of a passerby as the Bangladeshi cricket team touched down at Johannesburg International on Wednesday.

Nasty perhaps, but the sheepish faces of the team as they made their way through the airport terminal suggested there was every chance the remark could be an accurate one.

The Bangladeshi's looked a little nervous ahead of a tour of two Tests and three one-day internationals against South Africa, which they know won't be the nicest of propositions for them, on the field anyway.

As far as morale boosters go, their performance recently in the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka also wouldn't have helped their confidence much.

A nine-wicket loss to the Australians and another by 167 runs against New Zealand, a game where they were bowled out for 77, certainly doesn't suggest that they're a team in any sort of form.

"Everybody knows our team's a new one and it will be difficult for us here," said captain Khaled Masud, "but we're looking forward to the tour. We're a very young team, with an average age of around 20 and we're building for the future."

Full of enthusiasm, but lots to learn still

They don't have too much going for them do the Bangladesh cricket team, but youthful exuberance is one quality they have in abundance.

The majority of players in their squad have barely passed their 20th birthdays and the first training session of their South African tour on Thursday resembled more a first-year varsity team's than an international Test-playing one.

Compared to the rather glum faces they wore on arrival at the Johannesburg International Airport on Wednesday, the Bangladeshis on Thursday were an exuberant, bubbly bunch when first setting foot on the lush Wanderers turf for a training session.

They let out excited schoolboyish yelps of "yeah, yeah, yeah" whenever they hit the stumps or took a catch during fielding practice and looked a team intent on enjoying themselves.

Well they might, because once the serious business of their tour gets underway Test cricket's minnows might not be smiling all that much.

While they may be one day, names like Tapash Kumar Baishya, Monjurul Islam and Alok Kapali are not quite household names yet, and are unlikely to intimidate the locals too much.

They've lost all but one of the 13 Tests they've played in the two years since they gained Test status and a win of any sort on their tour of two Tests and three one-day internationals here will have the anti-corruption unit busters around in a flash.

On Friday, though, they have a gentle enough start to their tour in the traditional Nicky Oppenheimer game at Randjiesfontein.

Surprisingly their are no Oppenheimers in the host's team this year, which has veteran Pat Symcox captaining a virtual Highveld Strikers team containing players like Daryll Cullinan, Adam Bacher, Marthinus Otto, Matthew Street, Grant Elliott and last week's debut centurion Enoch Nkwe.

The game represents a good opportunity for the tourists to limber up ahead of the more serious stuff, as it usually has a distinct carnival atmosphere about it.

South Africa meanwhile have made a few changes in personnel for the first two one-day internationals against Bangladesh next week, with Martin van Jaarsveld getting a long-overdue call-up and Mfuneko Ngam also selected, subject to him coming through this weekend's SuperSport Series match between Eastern Province and Northerns without injury.

Errol Stewart and Dale Benkenstein are two perennial fringe players who have been included in the squad, with their KZN Dolphins teammate Jonty Rhodes given a break from what should be a relatively simple assignment.

I didn't think it to be necessary to give player profiles of Daryll Cullinan, Adam Bacher and Pat Symcox as they are all test players for South Africa and we've all seen them play.

I could not find the player profiles of the following players: Nagan, Xulu and Duffin.

More importantly, is it all downhill from here ? I looked at the South African team and frankly I don't know much about their domectic league to comment on our performance. It's good to beat a team that has Cullinan, Symcox and Bacher. Who are the rest of the folks ?

The South African league is under way and ALL the teams are playing. None of the senior players were in this team. Therefore, the team that was sent against us (except for the three mentioned above) wasn't exactly ...... you get the point.

STILL, let me add this cause I don't know if I'll be able to say it again anytime soon - IT FEELS GOOD TO WIN. We showed them .... didn't we ? (Had to edit content for profanity)
