Default Potential Cricketers' Strike against Cricket Board

Top Bangladesh players likely to go on strike amid growing discontent with cricket board - ESPNCricinfo

Bangladesh's cricketers have called a spontaneous - and unprecedented - press conference on Monday afternoon, with sources suggesting they could go on strike and even cast a shadow over next month's tour of India. The country's top cricketers are expected to be present at the press conference, which comes in the backdrop of simmering discontent among them over how the game is run in the country.

The trigger seems to be the Bangladesh Cricket Board's decision last month to abandon the Bangladesh Premier League's franchise-based model. It meant that the average professional cricketer's earning has gone to an all-time low. The players' woes were furthered after the BCB didn't raise the match fees in the first-class competition that began earlier this month. These, in addition to the salary cap applied to the Dhaka Premier League, although it used to be an open market for club-to-club transfer for players, for the last several years.

Shakib may soon find himself out of favor with Sheikh Hasina. Dictators do not like any protest whatsoever.

Possible solution will be 'dabi mene neya' superficially along with 'podanmontrir asshash' and a 'sakkhat at gonobhobon'. This has been Hasina strategy so far to quell any uprising. Let's see how much Shak and co can resist.

Problem is not SK, problem is the board. Dictator like SK will always want to provide highest benefit to specific group of people to ensure their regime's continuation. Look at how AL has raised the salary and benefits of civil servants.

Best part of Shakib is that she has direct communication with SK, bypassing Papon and his gang.

Of all series to go on strike before, they had to choose the tour of India

BCCI showed no mercy to WICB when their players went on strike before/during their tour of India

Here is the chance for BCB to send a second string team which may actually do much better than main team. What did the main team achieve so far? Innings defeats in test after test? Forgettable performance in T20. 8th positions in ODI world cup?

This is not your only national team players strike, all the first class players numbering 70 are behind the senior cricketers. Only under 19s are barred, do you want under 19s to tour India to play a series against the man in blues? Perhaps as a preparation for under 19s wc next year lol

Well what I read so far, some players gathered together in a press conference, the first condition criticizes their own association and their leadership so I doubt how united the movement is. Do they have an unanimous vote?

They are worried that now they have a harder beep test, the professionalism of coaches making them work harder, due to national duties they are missing on lucrative deals playing abroad, they are still the top earners in the country with minimum work-hours to the list, the perks they get are ominous and just dream for many highly educated youth in the country.

Do they have a count of how many jobless post graduate manpower our country is burdened with? Not that like Srilanka (while most of their tenure war-torn and still struggling with economy) they won multiple ICC trophies already

And also what about Afghanistan, they get the best hotels I guess so those players start peeing pants every time they play Rashid-Mujib-Nabi

Also for Shakib and few others what they could earn from upcoming games and tours can seem peanuts compared to what they have already acquired, Shakib probably have enough for 4 more generation to survive without doing anything but what about your average club cricketer who after years of struggle finally had a chance to play first-class and earn a decent living. Now he cannot back down as the seniors will not take it lightly. What a debacle

Question remains the same, who will be the 2nd string side?

If only BCB becomes a bit more diplomatic and show the understudies the potential monetary and professional gain..

Completely agreed with the players' demands; most of these are quite reasonable. The players are scrutinised and criticised when there is a lack of performance and rightly so. But when it comes to the Board, Papon and his cronies have been abusing their seats of power without mandate and accountability. Time and again they have invented policy and regulations based on their whims. Hopefully this player strike provides them with a much needed reality check.

Some valid points in the demand, but very irresponsible timing by not letting the BCB negotiate with them first before it went to this stage i.e. hartal.

There are few other observation and question marks:

Sakib mentioned that in "all first class games", players already knows the result before the game. Is it true or is it "till ke taal kora". i.e. if "few games" or "all games"? Regardless "true or false" its a serious allegation by Sakib about BCB to the world. ICC investigation coming in our way? Also how come in their 11 point demand, its not there? He already made the allegation, what happens if BCB agree will all their 11 points but not match fixing allegation? Will the players (including Sakib) will all go back and forget about this serious match fixing issue? I think he opened the Pandora box already,.... some head will fall.... and someone need to pay the price for this allegation .....there is no way to put this under the rug unresolved without addressing the issue.

The other observation is: most of their demand is related to salary and income. Most likely when those demands are addressed partially, the other demands (regardless how noble those ideas are) will be ignored.

Interesting to see how Bhaira bhai, Imrul and Tamim's career unfolds in this mess. My guess is there will be less tolerance to these senior players in future. Ektu norecho tou moresho.... less tolerance to their slumps.

If it goes too long.... few series will be cancelled, but eventually they will increase the flow of new bloods at rapid rate to reduce the influence of these over the hill senior players.

Papon is a shrewd and underrated about his management skill among the fans. He will find out the real trouble makers. They will be phased out sooner then later. Sakib is the only exceptional case, but he is not committed long term, he will leave one way or another. The rest (senior players) are replaceable (except for Mushfiq may be) .....sooner or later. And he has hundred percent backing of Hasina about whatever he plans to do.

So whatever happens... happens, but some senior players exits will be sooner than later. Mid term Is it good or bad? I don't know.....but short term it will be a roller coaster ride.

He mentioned about the first, second, third divisions and lower rungs of the leagues not first class matches. And he mentoined it on the context of how poor and biased umpiring decisions are ruining the prospects of upcoming players.

Their demands are reasonable when it comes to payment and income, BCB cronies seems to hoard all the wealth. It was astonishing to learn the training facilities in Mirpur doesn't even have an air conditioner

"Players should be allowed to play more than two overseas franchise-based league"

^ This part made me laugh though, definitely seems like a last minute point Shakib decided to mix in as he knows he is the only player good enough from this country to get even two or more contracts for overseas leagues

Here is the news my information is based on (where it mentioned about 1st devision cricket. :

Source

Even in your youtube link, Sakib started with "First division, 2nd Dvision, and 3rd division....". So even your own link support my "1st division" comment. Not sure where you are coming from when you mentioned its not 1st division he mentioned. Your you- tube reference even contradict your own comment.

And First division equates First Class Matches?

First Class Matches are multi day matches recognised by ICC as the top tier of domestic matches organised by member Boards. For Bangladesh - NCL, BCL.

First division, second division, etc in the context of Bangladesh cricket are Dhaka Premier league and the bottom rung leagues which are recognised as List A matches.

Putting aside the nitpicking of match categories, I am yet to hear or see a report where the players are accusing the board of Match fixing. Hopefully this is not a case of making "teel key taal" from us supporters

Bcb will fix this. There is no way they want to miss out India tour. India tour is the biggest revenue generating event for any board, and bcb will not mess it up.

Hasina is also in good terms with Shakib. So chances are most of the demands will be acknowledged.

Nit-picking can go both ways my friend.

if you wanted to correct me you could have said, "he mentioned 1st division, not 1st class"

By mentioning, "He mentioned about the second, third divisions and lower rungs of the leagues not first class matches" and omitting 1st division, created more confusion and wrong information.

Now the question still remain the same. By accusing games in 1st, 2nd and 3rd division games are fixed, he cannot just wake away without addressing the issue as if nothing ever being said. Either he us right (with proof) or he is wrong .....there is no in between. if he is right, BCB has to do some serious damage control with their plan and address the issue and few BCB heads rolling. If Sakib is wrong, he is in deep trouble.... may be another "paa dhorey maaf chawa" incident... this time papon instead of Loitta.

I am fully convinced that players are doing the right thing...it is about time...

Also a slap in the face to all who think Bangladesh has "better infrastructure" than Afghanistan just because we have been playing Tests for 20 years.

Afghanistan's training facilities in Dubai, Delhi/Noida, and Dehradun are world class. Bangladesh's are only average in Mirpur, and non-existent elsewhere (Khulna, Chittagong, Sylhet).

Afghanistan have been training in world class facilities since 2010 or so. Bangladesh without AC

Also 11 points is a lot and looks fairly comprehensive:

Will BCB agree to all of them? I hope the players are willing to compromise eg BCB addresses most pressing 4-5 demands immediately, and then fulfills the rest within 12 months.

Cancelling an India tour will be disastrous to a team like Bangladesh. BCCI will do everything to crush the BCB with even more vigor than they attempted to crush the PCB.

Hasina is also in good terms with Shakib. So chances are most of the demands will be acknowledged.
Jala Yunus, BCB spokesman, said "most of the demands are being met already" and gave the example of BPL. The next BPL is a special edition and they said it would revert back to franchise system.
