BDFlag Cricket season to go on as per schedule

Quote:
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that the 2011 World Cup preparations will not hurt this season's domestic calendar.

Country's major cricket venues in Dhaka and Chittagong are under construction for the showcase event, which will be inaugurated on February 17 next year at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. As co-hosts, Bangladesh will stage eight matches including two of the quarterfinals. That gave rise to the whispers that the game's governing body may cut short this season's calendar but BCB's tournament committee chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain said they have no such plans.

"We can assure everyone that all the domestic competitions will take place as per schedule and as far as I know the season's calendar is all but complete. True, there is an issue with the availability of the major venues like Mirpur, Fatullah and Chittagong due to construction work but we are focusing on the other venues across the country to run the show in this season," assured Gazi Ashraf yesterday.

"There is no uncertainty over any competition including premier division cricket league but some matches may be held outside Dhaka due to time constraint. We must complete all the competitions by January next year. You know the clubs have already started roping in their favoured players," he added.

The season is likely to kick off with the women's national league from September 15, which will be followed by longer-version competition of the National Cricket League (NCL).

Gazi Ashraf informed that they would stick to the changed format they had made last season. The governing body overhauled the country's lone first-class competition last year brining wholesale changes which has reduced the number of games due to shifting of league format.

"Though initially many opposed the new format but later everyone praised it. The short duration of the tournament and intensity of the competition made us believe that this format is effective for us," said Ashraf, a former national skipper.

As per draft calendar, the Premier Division T20 will start from November 27 after the completion of the NCL longer-version and then the most coveted 50-over competition will likely start from December 8. The NCL one-day competition, which wasn't held last year due to time constraint, will take place after conclusion of the premier league.

Everything however will be finalised after getting the go-ahead from cricket operations committee as there are some international commitments during that time. New Zealand will arrive on September 20 to play two Tests and three one-day matches while the board is also planning a tri-nation one-day tournament after that involving West Indies and Zimbabwe. There are also scheduled tours for the second string Bangladesh A team.

Gazi Ashraf also informed that they are working on bringing changes to the character of the pitches in domestic competitions. "We must come out of the spin-oriented pitches. We must give our pace bowlers enough opportunity to explore in the domestic scene so that our cricketer can compete well at the international stage," said Ashraf

I'm not so sure about that. I thought they looked pretty worn out this past month. A couple of months of rest would do them good....

Good news overall though. We cant stop the entire domestic calendar for a World Cup we have no chance of winning...

good planning!
But more than the Triseries I'd prefer a 5 ODI vs WI & a 3 ODI vs Zim.

^^ Format is nice. But too few games for the domestic players. They should play more FC games than T20 or ODs.

Problems starts with less FC matches. Then poor wicket and infrastructure adds to that problem.

very good news.

i think the FC tournament needs to played 6 teams home and away basis. not the way we played last time.

both the NCl and DPL 50 over games will be good preparation for players before the ODI. though from next season i will prefer the DPL be played as the 40 over format.

the t20 tournaments may be played after the WC. no need of playing too much t20 before WC. we may think of rearranging them after the WC and now concentrate on test and ODI.

So the schedule will be:
2 tests and 3 ODIs vs Kiwis in Sep-Oct
2 tests and 5 ODIs vs Zimbabwe (Probably a tri series)

That's all right?

Zim is still not a test playing side ... so we are not going to have the two tests against them.

BCB to discuss burning issues today

The board of directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will meet today to take decisions on some important issues like appointment of the support staff for the national team, domestic calendar and making the National Cricket Academy functional.

With only six months to go before the 2011 World Cup, BCB are yet to decide on the supporting staff for the national team. Interestingly they used three local coaches for the last three tours which has raised many eyebrows and many believe that it upset team spirit.

"There is hardly any time for us to take decisions regarding the support staff with the World Cup knocking at the door. Definitely it would be one of the major agendas in the meeting and hope a concrete decision would be taken about fielding coach, bowling coach and the psychologist for the national team," informed BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus.

"We have received some applications and have been contacting at personal level as well. Hope we can make a shortlist in the meeting," he added.

After Champaka Ramanayake left due to illness, the bowlers have been rudderless, to say the least. They have looked lost when the pressure is on, especially in the one-dayers. Shafiul Islam, for example, has impressed with picking up wickets but has been exorbitantly giving away runs in the shorter format. Rubel Hossain has also shown a few glimpses of good form but there hasn't been any sustained effort from the paceman. One is certain that the absence of a bowling coach is hurting the progress of Shafiul and Rubel, the bad form of Syed Rasel and Abdur Razzak clearly shows that even the senior bowlers need guidance.

The Tigers have also suffered at the absence of a fielding coach and ahead of a big tournament like the World Cup, the presence of a psychologist is crucial.

The board has some other burning issues to be solved immediately too. To make the National Cricket Academy functional is one of the major issues as they got the two-storied building with all the necessary modern facilities but still has not been furnished with all the components that will make it work.

The Rafiqul Alam-led selection panel, which is under tremendous pressure after the Tigers' ignominious defeats against lowly Ireland and Netherlands, is likely to get the extension in the meeting till next June.

The board will also approve the appointment of new CEO and CFO. Former cricketer Manzur Ahmed is all set to join as new CEO from September.

The domestic calendar will be also approved during the meeting. BCB has already confirmed that the 2011 World Cup preparations will not hurt this season's domestic calendar.

"There are 32 agendas in the list for tomorrow's (Thursday's) meeting," informed Yunus.

Why are you guys so happy about the domestic league format?

Only 22 FC games in a season is not enough for the domestic players.

agreed..didn't we used to have 34 FC games? Reducing FC games is not going to make us better in cricket at all..young players should be playing as much FC cricket as possible to get the mental strength
