Default Let's give Umpire Tanvir Ahmed another chance

After seeing his (Umpire Tanvir Ahmed's) quote on Cricinfo:

Quote:
"In terms of a no-ball, there is always the issue of the foot and the line being close to each other," Tanvir told Prothom Alo. "And if the bowler jumps quickly, there are occasions when it is difficult to spot it. I am new to international cricket. I made a mistake.

"If you look at my past, I don't have a bad history. It was one mistake. Inshallah, I will come back well. Every person has good days and bad days. Yesterday I had a bad day. The match just ended yesterday. I am not focusing on anything else. I am thinking about my mistake."

I think he deserves another chance. He is a budding international umpire who no doubt wants to make the step up to ODIs and Tests someday, and clipping his wings at this time is uncalled for. How many times have we complained about umpires not checking for no-balls unless a wicket falls? At least Tanvir Ahmed kept an eye on the bowler's foot - even if he called wrong on this occasion.

It is highly unlikely that he will make this error again, and let's not continue to pillory him for this. Needless to say, there were no ulterior motives at play here either. May he have a fruitful umpiring career in the years ahead!

MODS: Feel free to merge with the 'main' thread if that is policy, but I figure this deserves its own airtime - at least for a bit.

He's made one error in what was only his third game. Cut him some slack.

These are cushy jobs. Fat payments by the board, sponsors for essentially theatrics.

He will work maybe a good 15-20 days of intl cricket in a year but cash in a very respectable income. Flights, hotels, food all paid.

It’s a really good deal. You won’t be fired. You just..... coast.

Don’t feel so bad for the fat man who’s eating better than all of us with 1/10th of the effort.

This dude is woeful. He seems to have a history of poor decisions on the field. He represents Bangladeshi umpires and his consistent buffoonery can't be good for our image.

no sorry - his past records are awful. I can't believe he even said in his interview that he has no bad history - seriously!!! How did he even get into international umpiring! Sorry but no - good try though.

everyone deserves a second chance. For now, He should not officiate in International matches. Let him continue to officiate in BPL and if he doesn't improve then i guess he should probably consider other career options.

I think this incident highlights the poor quality of umpires in general in Bangladesh. Beyond Mr. Ahmed and his mistakes, one must look at whether there is a system in place in the country that can actually produce good umpires. Based on recent reports, good umpiring is neither expected nor encouraged from the grass root umpires. We can excoriate Mr. Ahmed or forgive him, that wont change the sickly system that produces below standard umpires. If broad systematic steps are not taken, such humiliations will be common place in near future.

I think he’s better than Moni who was very good on giving decision against BD.

The fact that so many people are reluctant to forgive and move on highlights how utterly self-critical they are with them SELVES.

Compassion starts from within. If you cannot forgive yourself for your past mistakes or the slightest error, you shall harbor a great hate, grudge, bitterness, resentment and atrocity for the whole world.

It all starts within.

The guys has been awful in BPL as well. Like someone already mentioned, he should not have been made into an international umpire to begin with.

Enamel Haque Moni has got to be a bad if not worse umpire. But in general Bangladeshis umpires arent very good. But to crease out poor decisions there is DRS. However this no ball was really pathetic.

Keeping him or not doesn't actually make a big change. However based on his local blunders and favouritism I would sack him
