Default Test matches in 2020: An open discussion on preparation and team selection

March - Zim at Home - 1
June - Aus at Home - 2
July - Srilanka away - 3
Aug - NZ at Home - 2

Feb - Pak away - 2 (not likely)

Question is are we ready to select only genuine test specialists and establish challenge for 5 days, a total of 40 days (50 if include Pak matches) of intense laborious patient cricket with proper class and mettle to showcase.

So we have,

Tamim
Mominul
Mushy
Riyad
Miraz
Taijul
Ebadat

These are the 7 sure shots that will play if they are fit. So we have vacancies for another opener, a middle order batsman, a wicketkeeper and another seamer. Then we have extras.

Right now, players that are almost confirmed to get first few games are:

Shadman
Liton
Rahi
Al Amin

For me, Shadman isnt a guranteed opener for all of 2020 if he cant string some decent knocks. Since Imrul and Saif are performing well, they are not too far behind in pushing Shadman if he continues to avg around 20s. Kinda hoping Saif comes through as he had a decent domestic run for past few years. However, if I am completely honest, I still want a veteran back in the batting order. With Shakib gone and Riyad not really a proper test batsmen, we need an anchor which Mominul has refused to play. The batting order lacks experience and I think someone like Naeem Islam still has a role to play

For us to do well this year... we need Tamim, Mominul, Mushy and Riyad to start scoring runs consistently and not once in a series. These 4 has to combine for 200+ runs in every innings.

For bowling, I am very excited about Ebadat as I think he will only get better this year. If Rahi and Fizz/ Al Amin can complement him that would form a decent seam attack. For bowling, Miraz and Taijul has to take charge with Shakib gone. Expecting Miraz to contribute more with the bat as he has a golden opportunity to move up the order. Nayeem is a strong 3rd option and I suspect BCB will likely push Aminul towards a debut at some point this year.

Did I miss someone?

LOL what a schedule. 8 Tests scheduled, and pretty much 6 of them are guaranteed to be wash outs due to the rainy seasons. Well done BCB.

Very good analysis Rinat.

You raised valid questions. Besides blaming the board and name calling we also need to understand the opportunity each of those matches brings for the players. This is their path to glory. BD boys need to remember that no matter what level of performance they set forth there would be rare or no chances for them to get pro league contracts. Shakib is an exception, Mustafiz I doubt any chance for future selections. Sparse selection of TIK, Riad etc. in CPL/PSL are again once in a while. Those options at their frequency will still be there.

Rather focus on Test, be like Mominul or Taijul. That won’t hurt chances in BPL at all.

8 test matches give you 16 innings of batting, 16 innings of bowling/keeping/fielding.

How many centuries our openers planning to make?

Are they keeping opponent bowlers under study or just leaving it to the habitual practice “we will see when time comes”? Modern cricket requires you to be proactive and not wait that long.

Plan early bowlers specially pacers at home and spinners away. How many of you planning for five wicket hauls for those 16 innings of bowling? Each test match brings the opportunity to grab 20 wickets. That is a total of 160 wickets to grab. You need to plan against 44 ( different batsmen - Zim, NZ, Aus, Sri). Are you keeping them under your study? Noting their preferred shots, heights, strides etc.

How many fifties or double centuries our openers planning on? What about middle order?

What are the individual targets of Liton, Tamim, Riad, Mushfiqur, Muminul, Miraz, Imrul etc.?

What game plan does the coach have in mind? Only 8 matches. A formidable salary for such small planning - it should be thorough! For each opponent what strategy if toss is won, what if not? Considering the eight grounds for each of these matches - what preparation plan and new talent hunt underway?

Those questions are important unless team continues to be i*potent in longer format.

Slip catching/low quality keeping continue hurting our chances. What remedy the board has for those in future?

I sincerely hope the Pakistan Tests are held and held on time, whether it be in a neutral venue or in Pakistan as per the FTP schedule. We cannot afford to not be playing Tests when we already play fewer than all other sides. This is precisely what killed Mominul's momentum.

My thoughts on what players we need to look at:

1) Mosaddek. If we want to do anything, we need to find our Babar Azam. We need a young batsman who will not only take over the mantle from Tamim-Mushy-Shakib but push the bar even higher. Mosaddek is only 24 and now is the time for him to be given a long run in the top 5. There is no excuse for not playing him. Babar Azam averaged in the 20s for 2 years before his break out 2019. Mosaddek needs a top 5 position in ODIs as well. He is not a T20 player, aside from the odd innings here and there.

2) Nayeem. We have lacked a tall spin bowler who can actually turn the ball. Nayeem must be picked as our #1 or #2 spinner (behind Taijul) and given ample opportunities just like Mosaddek. Miraz should be given Shakib's spot in the top 6 because that is the only way his batting is going to develop. If he can't do it, then Miraz should be dropped for a wrist spinner, because playing 2 off spinners and 2 SLAs in the same XI is mind numbingly idiotic.

3) A young seamer (Shoriful, Mrittunjoy, Tanzim). Ebadat, Rahi, and Khaled are all 26 years old, which is quite old for a fast bowler. They may only be able to bowl for 4-5 years before form or fitness strikes. Mustafiz does not look like he is interested or equipped to play Tests so might as well write him off if that is the most pragmatic thing. Bottom line is, we have a lot of pace talent in this U-19 team, and so Fizz is now expendable if the situation dictates.

4) A wrist spinner. No idea who it could be. Aminul Biplob is probably the front runner. But we need to try and find someone ASAP.

5) Preferably another young top order batsman. Right now it appears to be Saif, but it could be Towhid or Joy from the current U-19 bunch. I think Akbar Ali might also turn out to be a fantastic cricketer, so lets keep an eye out.

6) Nurul Hasan. He and Liton should just get a 1 on 1 shootout for the WK-batsman role in the side. We need a tall WK like Nurul who can stop the 5 wides and 4 byes due to his reach.

Shadman and mosaddek should probably get more chances.

Current u19 players imo need more time in domestic cricket and High performance, A team cricket, u23 emerging etc type stuff.

Honestly there are no quick solutions, the system isn’t working and until the system is fixed nothing will work and once the system works it will take at least 1-2 generations of cricketers (a generation being 5-7 year gaps) before the rewards are reaped.

It’s not just one part of BD cricket that is broken, there are parts in every sector that need sorting from players to selectors to BCB, to infrastructure.

If everyone was professional and did their job to the best of their ability that’d be a start. Just generally the work ethic and accountability for ones own performance seems to be lacking.

I mean the players for example, how can you be happy with yourself performing so poorly day in, day out? It’s not just them, that’s just one example.

BCB need to organise more FC cricket, flat out, it’s not a difficult thing to realise that Bangladeshi cricketers don’t play enough of it so for goodness sake just organise some more tournaments or make the NCL/BCL tournaments longer (obviously need better coaching and pitches to).

2020 goal should be fixing the attitudes.

Batting wise February Match 1 Day 1 not looking good for Domingo-(Mckenjie).

Lets see how it goes for Ottis - (Vettori).

High hopes for Day 2.

The questions raised about batting in previous post did not receive any +ve answer.

Will it be compensated by bowling and ground work? Fingers crossed.

Clearly shows the players are not equipped with playing longer innings and continue to make same mistakes when it matters. If Taijul can stick around 50 balls why cant our top order sustain and prolong innings. The quality of pacers and new ball were factors but not sure why the top and middle order played those shots. Its been happening decades after decades.

You can't expect anything better with a home-track bully leading the team overseas. It's time to hand the captaincy over to Miraz.

Time to give a boot to Liton as well. Nurul as a batsman alone is a much better fit for the Test team.

Good question! It's easy to forget that he is just 24!

Zim Test needs to be utilized to find a better combination for upcoming matches, not as just another opportunity to bully them to feel good again.

My XI for the Zim Test would be -

Tamim
Soumya/Jahurul
Shanto
Momin
Riyad
Mithun
Miraz (C)
Nurul (WK)
Taskin
Fizz/Shoriful
Rahi

Don't think Saif is ready for international cricket yet, though he may do fine against Zim (especially now that Jarvis is not coming). But, like I said earlier, this should not be about finding someone just good enough for Zim. I would keep him on the bench for now.

Don't like the idea of four lefties at the top either. We will most likely see Bilal Asif at Karachi (Apr), especially after Yashir Shah's lackluster show in Pindi. Only other decent right-hand top order batsman I can think of is Jahurul.

Don't think Mushfiq should be back for one match to disrupt the team, as he won't go to Pakistan for the 2nd Test either.

I would continue with Riyad till Karachi Test. If he continues to fail, time to dump him for good and bring in Mosaddek.

If Momin knows what's good for him, he should give up captaincy on his own.

Time to limit Liton to LOI. Nurul is a way better Test prospect.

Time to put Ebadot back in the bench as well, he still has a long way to go.

We badly need a left-arm pacer for variation. If Fizz is still not back to his old form, it's time to give Shofirul a go.

Hope BCB will have the intelligence to make a faster pitch on Mirpur this time around. It's too easy to choke Zim with SLAs on a slow pitch. But we need to take this opportunity to prepare the team for other oppositions, for away conditions.

In the longer run, when both Shakib and Mushfiq are back, two out of Shanto, Momin, Mosaddek, and Mithun will have to be phased out.

They also have upcoming challengers in Joy and Hridoy.

If I were Soumya, I would tell the coach not to consider me for middle order. He has a better chance of surviving as an opener, as he will be the senior most Test opener when Tamim is gone (and Imrul is no more in consideration). For now, I would just bid my time, like how Rohit Sharma did.

So where do we stand after this pathetic display? What will the coaches and players do differently when they face the same opponent in few weeks?

Our pace bowling has slightly improved. Spin is still toothless on away. Batting still a big concern, and bowlers cant even get a single run.

Liton should not be considered for test.

He got out in same fashion in both innings by playing sweep shots to full length spin ball and became lbw. Inability to learn makes him a rubbish player at this level.
