Default Beximco brands Tigers in WC

Beximco brands Tigers in WC

Quote:
Dhaka, Jan 11 (bdnews24.com) — Beximco will sponsor the Tigers in the cricket World Cup. The conglomerate closed the exclusive deal to brand the most popular sport team for Tk 35 million

The Bangladesh Cricket Board signed the deal with Beximco at a Dhaka hotel on Tuesday that would allow the company to display its logo on the leading arms of every player. The group's logo will also be displayed on the jerseys of the cricketers.

"Beximco has given Tk 35 million for six matches," BCB CEO Manzur Ahmed told reporters at Sonargaon Hotel referring to the number of first round matches the Tigers will play.

"The sponsorship will continue if the team reaches the next round," Manzur added.

The biggest cricketing extravaganza will also be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Eight matches will be played in Dhaka and Chittagong. The inaugural ceremony will be held in Dhaka on Feb 17.

Beximco vice-chairman Salman F Rahman said: "We are happy to be able to sponsor the team."

BCB president A F M Mostafa Kamal thanked the group of companies for being the national team's sponsor. "It is difficult to develop cricket without sponsorship," he said.

"The International Cricket Council has given us Tk 100 million, which is not enough to organise such a big event," Kamal added.

He also called for private funding for the construction of a stadium with a capacity of over 100,000 people. "Then we can organise tournaments like the IPL," he observed.

Beximco director Shayan F Rahman said the World Cup would be the largest sporting event to be hosted in Bangladesh.

The national team will be presented with a 100-feet cricket bat inscribed with messages from cricket lovers across the country on Feb 4, he announced.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, coach Jimmy Siddons and BCB director Jalal Yonus were present among others at the function.

No, this sponsorship agreement is valid till the worldcup. Grameenphone cannot sponsor the Tigers in any ICC event because Reliance is one of their premium business partners. So any telco is barred from sponsoring any national team taking part in that event.

But but,
Reliance doesn't operate in Bangladesh, neither any of its affiliates or subsidiaries.
Shouldn't it allow GP to sponsor Bangladesh Cricket team ?

30K stadium viewers vs millions of TV viewers.... The marketing power of the WC huge.

Yeah it's a bit unfair to GP, but look at the bright side- atleast we won't have to watch the horrible GP logo on our team jersey for a tournament.

I take back what i said earlier.
GP does not operate in India, but its parent company Telenor does.
Its called Uninor and have the same logo as any other Telenor brands around the world.
So, yes, GP could not sponsor the WC team.

Yup it's marketing 101. Companies pay extra for exclusivity. Happens in all global sporting events. In the '06 FIFA World Cup some Dutch supporters were not let in the stadium because they were wearing plain orange vests and the officials saw it as promoting the phone brand "Orange" which is a rival to one of the sponsors of the tournament. Even in the last few ICC tournaments Bangladesh was sponsored by UCB instead of GP. I still feel bad for GP, they are the ones promoting Bangladesh cricket and they even sponsored the official team song and video. But they won't get any exposure in the biggest tournament of all.

^Oops infact they were wearing trousers which had the logo of a beer company, Bavaria, rivals to sponsors Budweiser. They were told to take their trousers off before entering the stadium.
