Default U/19 Cricket World Cup 2020, South Africa

Warm-Up: Bangladesh produce late heroics to tie with Australia

Bangladesh pulled off a late comeback to dramatically tie their ICC U19 World Cup warm-up fixture against Australia in Pretoria.

Chasing Bangladesh's impressive tally of 250 for six from 43 overs, the Australians were bowled out for exactly 250 when tail-ender Todd Murphy was run out by Shahadat Hossain attempting the winning run off the final ball.

Bangladesh had contained Australia thanks to a masterful bowling performance from Shoriful Islam (four for 39) and Tanzid Hasan (two for 27).

Shoriful was key as the last three wickets fell in the final 15 balls while Sam Fanning (46), Corey Kelly (44) and Lachlan Hearne (41) top scored for Australia.

Bangladesh, having elected to bat, saw three players post half-centuries with Parvez Hossein Emon, Tawhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain all scoring well in a match reduced in overs due to inclement weather.

Shamim’s top score of 59 not out off 33 balls contained three fours and three sixes.

Zim has been playing quite well. However, im not sure how much stock we can put into warmups.

That being said, no room for error, and our team should be expected to make the semis, amd finish in the top 6 at the absolute worst.

Apparently a few of the zim boys have been playing school cricket in South Africa and doing quite well, that would explain why the zim team has been doing alright because the SA school system is very competitive.

NZ walked all over us in the last warm-up.

Oh well, we did beat them 4-1 last year at their own home.

Batting department still need some tuning in SA condition. Hopefully there will be no hiccup vs Zim and Scots, and we will be well acclimatized by the time we face Pak.

Hope Shoriful can keep up the momentum from the warm-ups and successfully lead rest of the pace attack.

How come M'joy hasn't bowled at all in the warm up games? Is he injured?

Shoriful doing very well...econimical and penetrative. Tanzim has been bowling with good economy, but he needs to pick up a few more wickets.

We have to target the semis. If we do, we get 3 games televised.

I think the more important question is why Mrittunjoy, with his stellar record at the U19 level, is yet to play a FC, List A or BPL match. He is almost 20 when most promising young players make their FC/domestic debuts at 17/18 (Shoriful, Joy, Hridoy, Akbar all have played FC/List A matches already). Is he a chucker?

This is the best Zim U19 side in years, if we're not careful they could send us crashing into the plate championship

Cricinfo: Harvey to Hridoy, Varma to Ashok: players to watch out for at the U-19 World Cup
Quote:
Towhid Hridoy (batsman, Bangladesh)

If his average of 55 in the 2018-19 Dhaka Premier Division T20 tournament isn't impressive enough, Hridoy enters the competition having gained useful experience at the 2018 edition of the World Cup in New Zealand. His last nine scores read: 51*, 73, 8, 82*, 123*, 115, 111, 53 and 36. He's also a handy offbreak bowler and is the side's vice-captain.

Shoriful Islam (bowler, Bangladesh)

The lanky left-arm pacer from Panchagor in Bangladesh will be potent in conditions that offer something for seam bowlers. He set the U-19 stage on fire after taking a five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Lincoln late last year and has followed it up with a four-for against Australia in the warm-ups. He is one of the most experienced players in the World Cup, having played eight first-class games and 26 List-A matches, where he averages 22.50 and 24.93 respectively.

Dane Schadendorf (wicketkeeper, Zimbabwe)

The subject of one of the first viral cricket videos of 2020, Schadendorf follows the footsteps of elder brother Jayden who represented Zimbabwe in the 2018 edition. The younger sibling is acrobatic behind the stumps and has shown his ability to apply himself in the lower middle-order during the qualifiers. Case in point: his 81 against India earlier this week took Zimbabwe close to a win in a warm-up game last week.

Charlie Peet (bowler, Scotland)

Against teams that are not familiar with top-quality spin, left-arm orthodox bowler Peet can be a handful. Against Jersey last year, he claimed 7 for 12 in Amsterdam and in the warm-ups finished with ridiculous figures of 6 for 2 against Japan. Not many opponents have seen Peet bowl, so the surprise element may find batsmen wanting. He's also very accurate, never conceding more than 35 runs in his youth ODI career.

AFG seems like new Srilanka, keep producing mystery spinners one after another and we still head scratch whenever Shakib is unavailable!

Ghaghari takes 6, Home team humbled.
