Coaching method for aggressive players.

I really do not understand how coaches tend to coach aggressive players. Or maybe aggressive isn't the right word. Players who just do not have the temperament to play decent long innings consistently. Players like the Nazirs, Afridis, Ashrafuls... On one hand you have players like Sehwag, Gilly, Gayle, Dilshan maybe even Tamim to a lesser extent -- all very aggressive players, and yet capable of building up important worthy innings.

Nazir, Afridi and Ashraful all 3 have a batting average of below 25 in ODIs. In Tests, surprsingly Afridid has the highest average of 35+ in spite of the other two being specialist batsmen for their team.

So what do the coaches tell them? In the above comment by Nazir he says Coach Pont told him to bat as long as possible.... Maybe simple words to a simple man who needs to focus and keep his game simple but really.... Really? After playing 300 games across all format he still needs to be told that? All 3 were also part of Dhaka Gladiators so what does a coach tell them? The same thing of bat as long as possible. The over used cliche of play your natural game. What is Ashrafuls natural game? What is Afridis natural game? Hit anywhere for 6. Next ball send it to vertically to the moon and then it comes down to the fielders hand.

No dont play your natural game. Fight it out. Man up and learn to curb those natural instincts and put team before you being a crowd puller making them go all boom boom while you get out next ball and your teams all gloom gloom. A lot of people talk about Afridi being the match winner. But the amount of matches he made sure Pakistan loses.... is toooo damnnn higghhhh .

Those players took the flamboyance and vigor as stairs for their ride, now if you call it a short-cut way to get to popularity and IPL ticket it would be unfair. Everybody is not born Rahul Dravid, Trott or Hussey. There are McCullums and there are Chanderpauls. You have to deal with it. A good coach becomes a Whatmore when he can differentiate those and utilize all the ingredients to get maximum possible.

Temperament is the key provided the batsman can read the match situation correctly, and has the basic ability to do the right thing. The right thing is always playing each ball according to its merit with a high percentage response. Sometimes the match situation demands batsmen to take chances with less safe shots at the right time, and therefore the right response, depending on the delivery as well as the match situation, may range from a good leave to a safely executed hook shot.

Coaches must find a way to inspire batsmen to harness their individual abilities technically and temperamentally in light of what I've mentioned above. Naturally, the coach needs to be an effective and passionate communicator and taskmaster, and the student an effective learner who can positively respond to the teachings both in and outside of coaching camp. Both monumental tasks in Bangladesh.

Yes it was interesting that Imran, Ash and Afridi were all part of the Dhaka squad (as was Pollard and the impressionable Anamul) and we got the very best out them all.

Imran told me that no coach had EVER told him to bat past 6 overs as his role. He felt that scoring as many as possible in the PP was his only goal. We changed that mindset so he could show his quality as a batter. Ashraful hadn't been given the confidence and backing to play his best cricket IMO. He got a verbal kick up the **** by Pollard after one game. Ash realised that we needed him to do well and not just play cameos. Backing him really worked. Afridi asked me what I wanted from him. And I said to go in with 6 overs to go and finish off matches professionally.

When you have CLEAR roles and goals that suit the players' own beliefs over what they are capable of, then you have the right plans for the team, too.

Thats interesting about Imran coach. Then again he plays for Pakistan where there is Afridi, Akmal brothers, Razzaq like big hitters to come. So in a T20 its kinda understandable if they tell him to just hit out and get maximum runs in first 6 pp overs. I would love to hopefully see you repeat the succes this time around. Beat Ash to a pulp and fill his head with sense please.

That is only because we love him - and believe that he has mettle left in him. I know coach you have said he needs to believe as much as you believe in him. You can bring out the best in him - so God Speed!

when javed Miandad become pakistan head coach, he tried to change the aggressive afridi into a responsible batsman. i think afridi got a century in a test during that time playing responsibly and miandad was very happy. but later on afridi could not keep it up and miandad was very disappointed that a talent was being wasted.

a better example could be hayden and gilchrist. one of the most explosive ODI opneing pair. but both of them used to bat with so much responsibility in test. although still they were aggressive but they also played with responsibility

Now only if Ashraful (on of the examples of exgressive players mentioned) can do great in BPL, then his position in national TEST team will be Pakka.

All aggressive batsmen should watch how Sehwag bats in tests. How he defends or lets go everything and hit the crap out of the balls in his comfort zone. And, his test SR is 82+.
