Default So when should the power play really be taken?

Don’t leave the Powerplay so late

When it comes to the vexed issue of the batting Powerplay, I’m convinced that the strategists will soon have enough historical data to crunch some meaningful numbers. As more ODI games are played under the new rules, there will be more data available and clear patterns will start to emerge.

Thus far, the batting Powerplay has been anything but! It has often been the Achilles heel for the batting team - poorly executed, poorly timed and the catalyst for a collapse. One of the problems with it has been this dual sense of fear (what if we lose wickets?) combined with the burden of self-expectation (the Powerplay is a powerful weapon that we MUST save for that match-winning moment). Instead of viewing it as another tactic in the batting arsenal, it’s almost viewed as Devil and Saviour in the one incarnation, thereby giving it that real Jekyll & Hyde quality that confuses clear thinking.

Gimme more

Thought provoking indeed. The PP's been around for a while now and it has added to the strategic nature of the game (more specifically ODIs), but are teams exploiting it properly? Or are they settling for less than what they can make?

If u have wickets in hand then take it around 35-38 over.
If u lose too many wicket then take it right after fall of 6th wicket.

it depends of too many things, there isn't a set time when you can take it. its different for every single game.

It completely depends on the situation of the team that is batting, but I'd normally take it around the 35-40 over mark.

I would love to take it during the 17-21st overs (as a surprise to the bowling team), given it is not an extremely spin-friendly pitch. The strike pace bowlers will be tired after bowling the initial overs and most probably teams can not use them during this period.

How to approach to a power play is a different question and it depends on the situation of the match. If not so many wickets are down in the first 15 overs, teams can use a batting allrounder having the ability to score quickly. Examples are Irfan, Johnson, Mashrafe, Maharuf, Broad, Afridi, Bravo, Oram...every team has such players.

If no wicket is down and you have Jayasuriyas at the crease, just let them play their natural game. You do not have to score all the runs during the power play.

If at least 4 wickets are down, better delay the power play. It gives the batting team some breathing space and score in singles. Also, the bowling team will have the feeling that there still remains one power play. This probably gives some psychological advantage. So, build the innings till the 7th wicket is down and then go for the power play. In most cases, you'll still have the bowling allrounder in the crease to take advantage of the power play.

that sounds a good idea.

many if not most cases, we are too many wickets down by the 40th over against G8 sides...might as well take a PP very soon.

Powerplay is too complicated for a person to say that it should always be taken after a certain number of overs.

I think a powerplay should be taken according to the conditons of the match. And that is why we have a captain. To decide when to take it.

With 2 set players, I'd say in the 29-34 overs area. Because with 2 set batsmen they likely won't get out. Teams usually take it at the ball change, but I disagree, because if you have wickets in hand, you could go for runs even then, without a powerplay.

Situation, intuition, assessment of condition.
No fixed answer to this.
For example, as rain was looming Aussies decided to go for Powerplay on the 37th over today.

Batting powerplay should be taken before the 30th over to make the game more interesting during the middle overs.

Last 5 Overs or after falling 2nd last specialist batsman whichever comes earlier considering the situation is normal.

It can be changed according to situation like Australia against India yesterday mentioned by One World.
