one thing about the cartoon..it says Bangla..Not Bangladesh..they have to realize that We r not Bangla or Bengal..If u just say Bangla it means the language or the whole east and west Bengal..our country should be said as Bangladesh..just like they said India IMHO

Yes, but just as NZ is called Kiwis (not just Black Caps), and South Africa is called Saffers (not just Proteas), I think it'd be nice to grow another layer of skin and accept that those not well-read, but otherwise who are very well-meaning use Bangla and Bangers as a term of endearment along with our current moniker as 'the Tigers'. Not everything has to be taken as a slight against us. We can have a bit of a laugh too, no?

Well said. Besides, I think they are referring to Banglawash and Indiawash and opted to not use the word WASH. As you can see, the kiwi is definitely wet and leaking after the wash....at least that's my take on it.

১৯৯৭ সাল, রাত প্রায় দুটা। ওয়াইকাটো ইউনিভার্সিটি’র লেকচার থিয়েটার। যা ভূতের উপদ্রব (!) এর জন্য বিখ্যাত। জরূরী মিটিং’এ সমবেত হয়েছে হ্যামিল্টনে অবস্থিত বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট দলের সব ডাইহার্ড সমর্থকরা।

সকালে দায়সারাভাবে এসাইনমেন্ট জমা দিয়ে সারাদিন মাঠে কাটানোর পর সবাই ক্লান্ত। তারচেয়ে অনেক অনেক বেশী হতাশ, নিউজীল্যান্ড এর নর্থান ডিস্ট্রিক্ট দলের বিরূদ্ধে বাংলাদেশ দলের ব্যাটিং বিপর্যয়ের জন্য। রাতে কয়েকঘন্টা আগেই বন্ধু আতাহারের দাওয়াত ছিল আমার বাসায়। সেখান থেকে সবাই এখানে এসেছে বাংলাদেশ দলের আশু বিপর্যয় ও আমাদের কর্তব্য নিয়ে আলোচনা করার জন্য।

খেলার অবস্থা দেখে মনে হচ্ছে, দুই ইনিংসের খেলা দেড় দিনেই শেষ হয়ে যাবে। ‘দেশের মান সম্মান লুটাইবে ধুলিতলে’। ক্লাসের কিউই বন্ধুদের সামনে আর মুখ দেখানো যাবে না। ইন্ডিয়ান ফ্রেন্ডরা করুনার চোখে তাকাবে। এরই মদ্ধ্যে যোগ হয়েছে আরেক আপদ। হ্যামিল্টনের এক ছোকড়া আছে নিউজীল্যান্ড দলে, তাই সবার মনযোগ আরো বেশি। ছোকড়া’র ভাই আবার এই ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্র। সেই ছোকড়া’কে এখানে সবাই ‘ড্যানী’ নামে চিনে। আসল নাম, ড্যানিয়েল ভিট্টোরী!

বয়সে সবচেয়ে ছোট মিল্টন’এর প্রস্তাব, ‘নাজমুল ভাই, চলেন এখন গিয়া মাঠ কোপাইয়া আসি’। ডাক্তার তাসলিম বলল, ‘না না, এইটা ক্রিমিনাল অফেন্স হতে পারে, কারন ধারালো অস্ত্র ব্যাবহার করা হয়েছে! তার চেয়ে চলেন মাঠে গিয়া পিচে বিয়ার ঢাইলা দেই, ধরা খাইলে বলব, টাল হইয়া কি করতে কি কইরা ফেলছি, খেয়াল নাই, মাফ কইরা দেন’। শেষ পর্যন্ত সিদ্ধান্ত হলো, কালকে হয়তো বাংলাদেশ ভালো খেলতেও পারে। মিরাকল কিছু হলেও হতেও পারে। হয়তো দেখা যাবে, দোস্ত আতাহার তার জীবনের সবচেয়ে ভালো খেলাটা কালকের জন্য জমা রেখে দিয়েছিল। কারন আমার বাসার ভাত এখনো ওর হজম হয়নি। আমি লজ্জ্বা শরমের মাথা খেয়ে, খাওয়ার পরে (জাতীয় দ্বায়িত্ব হিসাবে) ওর প্লেট ধুয়ে দিয়েছি। যাতে কালকে ভালো করে ব্যাট করতে পারে! খেলোয়ার বলে কথা!

পরদিন আবারও আমরা হ্যামিল্টনের সব বাংলাদেশি আশায় বুক বেধে মাঠে যাই। সঙ্গে তাবিজ, সুরা কালাম, কোন কিছুরই কমতি নেই। সলোমন আইল্যান্ডের বন্ধু লেস্টার রস, তাদের দেশের তাবিজ, ‘পুরিপুরি’ দিয়ে আমাদের সাথে সঙ্ঘতি প্রকাশ করল। দুই দিনে দ্বিতীয় বার আউট হওয়ার পর আমি আতাহারের কাছে রীতিমত সিগারেট দাবী করে বসলাম। টাইগার আতাহার মিন মিন করে বলল, আমি সিগারেট খাই না। আমি বললাম, সিগারেটও খাও না, রানও পাও না, দোস্ত তুমি কোন কাজের না। ও লজ্জ্বা শরমের মাথা খেয়ে আম্পায়ার বিলি বাওডেন’ এর কাছ থেকে চেয়ে দুইটা সিগারেট এনে দিয়ে, জাতি ও দেশের প্রতি তার কর্তব্য পালন করেছিল!

তার পর, এক পর্যায়ে সবাই, আল্লাহ মেঘ দে, পানি দে গাইলাম। মামুন মাঠে ‘ঠাটা’ পড়বে বলে নিশ্চিত ভবিষ্যত বানী করল। কিন্তু কিছুতেই কিছু হইল না, একের পর এক বংগ সন্তান এর পতন ঘটিতে লাগিল। মোট সাড়ে দশ ঘন্টায় খেলা খতম। বাংলাদেশ দলের ইনিংস পরাজয়! পরের কয়েকদিন আমি অসুখের অযুহাতে ক্যম্পাস বাদে সবখানেই যাই, আর মনে মনে ভাবি ছেলেদের জন্য কেন বোরখা নাই!

তেত্রিশ বছর না হলেও তের বছর কেটে গ্যাছে! নাদের আলী’র মত আতাহার আলী’ও কথা রাখেনি (আসলে রাখতে পারে নি)। আমাদের সেই কালকে, আর আসে না। আমরা কান পাতার মত, ইন্টারনেট খুলে রই। মাঝে মাঝে দেখি, হটাত আলোর ঝলকানি! তারপর আবার সেই আন্ধকার। এরই মধ্যে আমার ঘাড়ে চড়ে বাংলাদেশ দলকে সমর্থন করতে যাওয়া আমার ছেলে শামায়েল আমকে ঘাড়ে নেওয়ার মত বড় হয়ে গ্যাছে।




আবশেষে এলো সেই দিন, ১৭ অক্টোবর, বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট দল একটু আগেই মিরপুরে নিউজীল্যান্ড’কে ৪-০ ম্যাচে হারিয়ে ‘হোয়াইটওয়াশ’ করে সিরিজ জিতে নিয়েছে। মনে হয়, আমি/আমরা হাজার বছর ধরে এই দিনেরই অপেক্ষায় ছিলাম। যাকে বলে এক্কেবারে, বাংলাওয়াশ।

মিল্টন, মামুন ও তাসলিম, জানি না তোমরা এখন কোথায়! তবে আমি ১০০ ভাগ নিশ্চিত, পৃথিবীর যেখানেই থাকো না কেন, আমার মত তোমরাও সব খেলা দেখেছ, আর আমার মতই খুশী হয়েছ। আবার যেদিন দেখা হবে, আমার কাছে তোমাদের ‘পেট চুক্তি’ খাওয়া পাওনা রইল। জেনে খুশী হবে, আমার কাছে এখন সিডনী’র সবচেয়ে বড় বাংলাদেশী পতাকা, আমি সিডনী ক্রিকেট গ্রাউন্ড’এ উড়াবো বলে, হান্নান কিছুদিন আগে ঢাকা থেকে নিয়ে এসেছে! গুড নাইট এন্ড গুড লাক, বাংলাদেশ।
