As long as we don't lose down to no 9 in the next one year, I will be happy. NZ moved by the 5 places in the span of 2 months.

That's because rating gap between them and higher ranking teams were not that great. But we will still be 30-35 point behind 7th ranked team when we become the 8th, and that gap will take years to overcome.

if we keep winning home ODIs, it won't take years...maybe 3 years tops.

but then after the world cup, there will be an ODI league in place. i guess that will have its own ratings table that should start fresh. so we could be anywheres.

West Indies will play SL at the end of the year, I am pretty sure that they will be beaten. Will that make a difference?

Zimbabwe has a pretty good team now. In the first ODI, they gave SA run for their money. In the the second ODI, they have also put a very good total. Remember, they are playing against SA in SA. To be honest, based on current form, I will be just happy if we don't slip up and win the series.

Default Zimbabawe

The Zimbabwe series, 5 matches right? Is it that long as we win, we'd get that one point to get ahead of West Indies? Or do we have to win two more games than them? I guess losing would not be an option in this series. What outsiders (Aussies, Poms, general Indian public) would not realise is that both the teams have improved significantly over the last six months. If Bangladesh beats ZImbabwe 5-0, its not because they are a very weak team incapable of winning, its because we are miles ahead of the team that played in the Asia Cup few months ago..I really hope we hold onto this improved position in terms of performance...even more than teh ranking, which follows performance anyway.

I'm expecting a 5-0 series win (4-1 at the worst) not because we're vastly superior but primarily due to our new found ability to scrape out wins coupled with home court advantage.

Bangladesh are still placed behind the Caribbean side when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point. The West Indies have 67.06 ratings points while Bangladesh have 66.68 ratings points
Bangladesh had started the series on 53 ratings point.

Me too. Wasn't so happy winning against their inferior team, I though they will volunteer to play with us, to regain the rubber soon. But they seem to be reluctant. Something wrong with their cricket in general I guess. They lost a lot of their sense of pride, that they had as a team.

Well, as it looks like to me, with a lots of assumptions in mind. I may be wrong. I'm expecting a series with their full side and winning it.

Looks like it will be difficult to hold on to number 8 position.

In december 2010, Bangladesh will be playing Zimbawe and Sri Lanka will be playing West Indies for 5 match ODI series.

Here is the possible ranking scenario -

Bangladesh win 5-0
Bangladesh will have 70 rating points, move to number 8

Bangladesh win 4-1
Bangladesh gain no rating point, remain at 67 (not sure about decimal points)

Bangladesh win 3-2
Bangladesh slips to 64 rating points, slip to number 9 position

Outcome of Sri Lanka vs West Indies
Sri Lanka win 5-0
West Indies will have 65 rating points, slip to number 9 if we defeat Zimbabwe by 5-0 or 4-1.

Sri Lanka win 4-1
West Indies will have 70 rating points, remain at number 8 regardless of our result.

Sri Lanka win 3-2
West Indies will have 74 rating points. Comfortably remain at number 8.

With our cricket moving forward and WI cricket moving backward I see us being comfortably being at #8 after the WC..don't wanna sound arrogant but it looks like that will happen since WI cricket is going through so many problems..so I see us distancing ourselves pretty soon if not after the Zim series..

Zimbabwe is no.11. That's the problem. We can't afford to lose a game against them.

I agree WI going backward and we are going forward. And yes, with WC'11 being held at subcontinent, we have good opportunity going ahead of WI in rating. However, I believe WI is still a better team in foreign conditions (comparing to us), so it won't be easy to take a clear lead in rating ahead of them.

The Zimbabwe side is now quite good. They are no longer the 3rd string side we beat in Bangladesh in 2004. Even Grant Flower is back ! Heath Streak is now the coach, I believe.

However, in our conditions, we should beat them. In fact, again in our conditions only, on a given day, we could beat anybody. Maybe, not the series, but at least a match or two.

But coming to ZIM, we should be favourites but it will be interesting.

Long story short, If WI manages to win at least 1 match out of 5 against SL then we will go down to no.9 ?

Ratings should not affect us. it is just a number and how our opponent sees us. what really matters is that we don't stop winning . rating/ top Ranking will automatically come be it 2011 or 2012 or 2013...

Ya thats a good point..their better then us when they are in foreign conditions..I think another thing we have to consider is that their batsmen are extremely dangerous once they get going..Gayle, Bravo, and Pollard are all very good strikers and then you have good consolidators in Chanders and Sarwan..our batsmen aren't as explosive..overall as a team though they seem to be in a mess which is why their consistently underachieving while our team chemistry is strong now..unless WI improve their team chemistry then I see them going more downhill..

We are still number 9 despite what you are reading. Just look up the official ICC table. However, if SL beats WI and we beat ZIM, we will be above them.
