I think this news is pretty accurate. So this is how its going to go :-

Head Coach - Chandika Haturusinghe OR Micheal Bevan OR Alan Butcher OR Romesh Kaluwitharana.
My pick - Chandika Haturusinghe. 2nd pick would be Alan Butcher. Not sure how good Romesh will be. And no-no for Bevan.

Bowling Coach - Chaminda Vaas OR Heath Streak
My pick - Both are extremely good, but I will go with Vaas. He will gel in well with Chandika.

High Performance Coach - Robin Singh.
- I think this is a gamble. He has done well as India's fielding coach. Thats a positive sign. IDK how successful he will be grooming our future players.

Conditioning coach - Mario Vilavarayan.
- Dont know much about him, hope he is good too.

* All in all, it looks like BCB is up for a huge Sri Lankan coaching unit!

Robin Singh is good enough to be our head coach. Having him as a high performance coach will be a huge move step up for BD cricket. Very capable, professional coach.

Vaas will INDEED join the staff as Bowling Coach par NTV. I bet Chandika requested his own hand-picked staff. Glad BCB was flexible with it.

Thanks for the heads up Jeesh. I will go with your comments! I assume some big changes coming in the team once we have a no-nonsense coach. Hence, look out for Robin's boys at High Performance.

I think it might be Bevan or Butcher for Batting Consultancy, as per the above news.

Good luck to Chandika Hathurusinghe... but I don't know why he lied about being approached for the role to everyone. Better to just say "no comment" rather than tell lies.

Looks like a delve into the SL coaching staff on the cards here.

I really hope this works out. Not enough time for a disaster though in the next 10 months to the CWC. Let's all hope this is good news for fans.

We all wish him well!

Ganguly, CH and Vaas would be a lethal coaching trio but it still wwouldn't bring out the best of our players as Coach Pont said..

Dont label someone as a liar before you know the full story!

Can it not be that he was not approached when he was asked? than later on they approached him knowing how bcb works? why would you say he lied just based on some comments.! don't need to be jealous! we are all supporting him! better credentials than some so called coach's that are trying to promote themselves by various means. Good to to the new coach

Welcome coach! Hopefully this is the beginning of something good. From what I have heard and read so far this seems to be a good appointment. Instead of just going by reputation or nationality BCB seems to have done their homework this time and found someone that should be a good match for us. Now hopefully the other vacant positions are filled up soon by suitable candidates.

I was reading every news article as we all were that he denied speaking with BCB and didn't want talk about it and untrue rumours as it was causing him issues with NSW position.. and this was just 2 days ago. So either the BCB spoke with him for the first time yesterday (and that is not true clearly ) or he had talks with BCB long before, as was leaked by a board member.

Anyway, it's not an issue, bhai. He is a great appointment. Someone who has been assistant at a first class team and head coach of a T20 franchise team.

As a first international appointment he will be nervous and a first world cup, but I am sure can make a positive and instant impact as he understands the culture.

Let's hope the rest of the staff can be filled with equally successful coaches who know their stuff. Lessons to be learned from the past there.

Hoping for and expecting great things from this new set up. Not long to get it right before the World Cup.

Yes it was furstrating what was happening for last few years... but at the end, I think, Papon is doing the right thing.

Why?

BPL Issue: Unlike other fans, I blame mainly Lotus Kamal (LK) rather than Papon for the whole fiasco. The financial model was not-sustainable from the begining, and all the issues were hidden under the rug while LK knew that what he need was to buy some time, get the glory and flee before all fall out. On the other hand Papon at-least tried to address the issues instead of ignoring those. Yes he failed to a) resolve payment issue; b) restart the tournament. But in my opinion as a fan, its better to restart it later after addressing the issues rather than re-start with problems and fumble again.

Interference with team selection: While it was well documented that Kamal multiple times undermined the process and influenced the team selection, so far Papon avoided that pitfall. LK may have the good intension and have done out of frustration, but if the BCB chairman himself break the process, the end result cannot be good. What LK should have done is, if he is unhappy with the selectors, he should fire them after the series and select a new one... that's what he (LK) failed to do.

Pakistan Series Issue: While LK made a mess and left with false promise that is not good for BD cricket, Papon handled the mess with intellegence, dignity and professionally.

Communication with the media: Every time LK opens his mouth to the media, he created controversies. he himself was the source of leakage to media and sometimes leakage of false/confused information. Compared to that, Papon's interaction with the media, if not perfect, ususally is much better. Whatever he reveals, he reveals with a purpsoe and ususally it matches with his end game. Its not easy to deal with our reporters who lives in fantasy world, bit so far he (papon) managed them well.

Dealing with Players: Under LK we all remember his infamous picture of Sakib and him. He acts like a dictator and sometimes acted very unprofessionally. Now compare that with how Papon dealt with Ashraful (in BLP saga), Rahim after ZIM saga, Sakib in World Cup saga, Rahim and coach in last World cup. He did that more professionally and his statements after those one-to-one meeting are more well thought and gave little room for media to create more controvercy.

Dealing with the "evil Three" in ICC: Some fans thought that he sold BCB to BCCI so easily. But I disagree. I thought it was a very difficult time for the rest of the 7 nations. We being in the bottom, we had to be very carefull so that we don't make the wrong move then left all alone at the end. Papon evaluated the situation correctly, negociated and got whatever he could leverage. Now see what happened? one by one everybody negociated with the "evil three". If he would have waited longer, we would have got nothing and beg for thier mercy, and there would be nobody to save us.

Selection of coaches: This time the process was much more precise, well thought and planned, less fumble and within the planned time frame. Also they were not sticked with only Aus coaches or only high profile coaches. Haturusinghe and Robin Singh are both young and very talented coaches whose ceiling are very high. In top of that if they can get Vaas or Streak, that would be another very good choice.

Not make changes quick enough: As a fan I was frustrated for waiting too long to make the change. But he is the Chairman and I am the fan. I think he made the right decision to wait and give the current coach and team enough time to self rectify which never happened. Now he is making the move, that makes his decision a fair one for eveybody. he proved that he will give enough time before he make his changes. And when he make changes, look like he makes the right changes .... atleast that's what it looks like for now 9lookng from face value).

Is he making all the right changes? Defineley no. but you have to keep in mind: a) he has to work woith the same BCB management (directors like Akram, Jalal, Lipu, etc); and b) We are talking managing an organization in Bangladesh.

So things are not ideal under Papon, but it's not as bad as some fans says. I see vast improvement in profesionalism, committed to following process, planning, people management in this chairman than last few two that we have witnessed. So its not going to be easy or guranteed, but I still see hope under his leadersip.

So kudos to papon for making some good decisions.

DHAKA, Monday, 19 May 2014

Media Release

Chandika Hathurusinghe appointed National Team Head Coach

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announces the appointment of Upul Chandika Hathurusinghe as the National Team Head Coach. The former Sri Lanka Test batsman has agreed a two-year term to coach the Bangladesh Team. Mr Hathurusinghe is expected to take over the head coach’s responsibility ahead of the three-match ODI series against India next month.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan, MP said the experience and vast knowledge of the new head coach will be extremely beneficial for the Bangladesh players: “We had been on the lookout for someone of similar profile to take over the role of the National Team coach. He has a strong background in coaching international standard teams and his understanding of different conditions and cultures will be very helpful.”

BCB Acting CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said: “The Board had acted on the recommendations of the committee formed to nominate the national coach and we would like to thank the members for their effort. The Bangladesh team has a busy and demanding schedule over the next two years and we hope that in the capable hands of Mr Hathurusinghe the team will continue to develop and will see success.”

BRIEF PROFILE: Hathurusinghe, 45, began his cricket coaching career in 2005. He is a Cricket Australia and ECB Level 3 qualified coach with substantial international and first-class coaching experience. He is currently the coach for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League and an assistant coach for New South Wales ‘Blues’. He was also the assistant coach for Australia ‘A’ and an Interim head coach for NSW ‘Blues’, consultant coach for the Sydney Sixes for Champions League T20 and consultant coach for Canada in the 2011 World Cup. Between 2006-2010 he was a batting cum shadow coach to the Sri Lanka National Team for a period of 18 months and prior to that the head coach of the Sri Lanka A Team for three years. This followed a two-year stint as the head coach for the UAE National Team and several club-level coaching assignments in England, Sri Lanka and Australia.

As a right-handed top-order batsman and medium-fast bowler Hathurusinghe appeared in 26 Tests and 35 One Day Internationals for the Sri Lanka.

BOARD APPOINTS STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH

The BCB has appointed Mario Villavarayen as the National Team’s Strength & Conditioning Coach. The 40-year old Sri Lankan had been serving as Sri Lanka Cricket’s strength and conditioning coach since 2011. He had also performed the same role for Sri Lanka Cricket’s development squads (from 2008 to 2010) and Sri Lankan Premier League side Uthura Rudras (2012) and Indian Premier League team Kochi Tuskers (2011).

Mr Villavarayen is a former first class cricketer and has represented Sri Lanka A. He will join the Bangladesh National Team on a two-year contract. He is expected to arrive in Bangladesh in June before the start of the ODI series against India.
