One question, how long will it take for bangladesh to become number 6-7 in tests... (and realistic answers, not like ''oh, february the 19th''.

in tests?..it'll take some time for that..but in odi..who knows it can be achived in 2years..but for that we have to be consistant..not a win here and there..this wont do..if we play like that it'll take another 5-6 years to go to #7

Basiacally, although bengladesh always plays to win... they need to adapt to ''drawing'' games... That way points are eaasily available

According to the rankings FAQ, 100 points indicates a team that is more or less 50-50 in its W-L record against the major teams. 120 is the benchmark of being one of the strongest teams at that moment.

Our current point is 66.28. That 100 point marker needs to be our next goal by keeping our win-loss ration close to 50-50. That 100 point will keep us close to the middle between the 5-7 rankings. If we have a decent world cup and follow up with keeping the next few series' close, the august reset will give us a big boost as the 2008 record (where we had 5-21 with wins vs. UAE, IREx3, NZ) will disappear.

I'm not sure of the math but I think our gap with NZ and PAK could close in more due to that.

historic day...i feel we are stronger than WI, we can use home conditions to our advantage...we will tussle with NZ since they have such a big lead on us points wise.

i have come up with a ranking scheme, and will try to iron out any remaining kinks in it...will start to update it after the WC is finished. i think ICC should do this anyways since the ODI league will start from after teh WC.

Meh, #8 is for pink pampers wearing unicorns. #1 is where we need to be. That, or win the World Cup.

Thanks for reminding the important strategy for Test Cricket ranking that a draw means a lot. It does not have to be win all the time like boxing current champion does not loose his title unless defeated. For this, team has to be without of too many impulsive at once for test format. We had bunch of those up until now. Australia slumped steeply down after few cool heads retired at once.Someone has to hold the ground in second innings. All the gallery players will be in T20/one-day format.

Right now, we have come a long way to 8th in ODI. We have great pool of players for both formats now. India uses Dravid and Laxman for tests and Rohit Sharma/Yusuf Pathan for T20 wisely. I favor Mahmudullah/Naem than Ashraful/S. Nafees. I think we should experiment with Mahmudullah coming after Raqibul.
Another strategy could be spinner combinations- Bangladesh has the best trio of SLA's-Sakib, Razzak and Shuvo. A full time off-spinner could add diversity in attack, specially outside the continent.
Mahmudullah/Naem should not be considered a specialist bowler. Shafiul and Rubel are great pacers.
Coaching staff will now face the burden to identify players for the right format.
Hoping for the brighter day in Test for Bangladesh!!

For BD, 8th is something great, because 8 seems to be the catch word of ICC for all sorts of things. Like fixture of WC, first eight is divided first. For two tier again first 8, for relegation/Minnow tag after 8th spot .. etc etc. Considering our threats from the critics/ICC reorg formulas, if we can confirm 8th position & hold on to it with a lead from WI, we will enter permanently in elite G8. That's an achievement by itself and bigger than anything at this moment.
Don't worry. They will just call it the G9 from then on...

Still congrats to BD and the boys for climbing us up the ladder

I wrote to Cricinfo asking why this had not been a news article given that this is the first time a non-traditional team has broken into the elite eight. Not sure if my email sparked it or not but here it is finally:

this ranking means very little to me until we beat the REAL WINDIES TEAM in the World Cup.

this time they have guys like Gayle, Bravo, Kevin Pollard so it is a full strength squad. won't be that easy to beat them but inshaAllah it surely will be a lot of fun to watch Bangladesh vs. West Indies

remember, WINDIES are aware of the fact that they struggle against spin, they know their weaknesses so we can expect to be prepared from all fronts not just spin! this is international cricket after all....
