Shahadat ↑(up)?
He got wickets, but gave away too many runs and couldn't wipe out the tail. I would give him → (no change)

Its just like stock tracking. It’s an indication of which direction his performance is moving. Not necessarily the absolute value. He may not performed according to our expectation, but compared to his last few performance he did better. For example before today, if his stock was may be 10 cents/share, now may be it’s up to 12 cents/share whereas our expectation may be much much higher for him. Therefore ↑ doesn't necessarily means his performance is upto the mark yet.
But on second thought, you have a good case to still give him a → (no change)

our pacers completely failed to cut the tail today. But that chapter is gone, now its time to see how far Alok and can go.

When boundries dry up they usually give their wkts away by playing some expansive shots regardless of the wrong ball or the right ball! somehow they forget about taking singles or doubles, therefore, keeping the scoreboard ticking and their personal account too!
I hope Mushfiqur Rahim is an exception to this.

93 pc of Tushar's runs came from boundaries and for Alok it's 77 pc. They should absolutely take more singles and doubles and keep it rotating
|
With due respect, I don't think we can fault our batsmen for not nudging singles under these circumstances.
I have seen enough county cricket to know what these opposition bowlers will try to do. Every county has 3 or 4 of the John Lewis type medium pacers on their staff who make their living out of hitting the seam on the off-stump and trying to get the ball to seam. They typically bowl with a 7-2 field with two slippers and 5 fielders in the covers between gully and mid-off and will just keep pegging away at that line till the batsman makes a mistake. Under these circumstances and especially on a first day pitch, the best you can do really is to wait for the ones too wide or too full and get them past the cover fielders for four.
I have gone on and on about the importance of singles in ODI cricket, but in this form of the game, wicket preservation is key and as long as they aren't getting out, I don't have too many complaints. I'd rather have them wait for the bad balls against medium-pace seam bowlers than get out by being adventurous, trying to nudge the ball onto the leg-side to rotate the strike. In short, I don't advise playing across the line. As long as they play with a straight bat and negotiate the seam, they will get enough bad balls to put away. After all, most of these guys aren't Test class bowlers and the wicket will become easier tomorrow and the day after.
|
I'm afraid, have to disagree with this one! Although, many of the county bowlers do bowl a nagging line and lenth with seam up and can swing both ways- in the air and of the pitch- but they are no Mcgraths or Pollocks. Running singles and doubles are the most basic integral of batting- ODI or test! Specially in theTests, where boundary balls should be few and far in between! It keeps the scoreboard ticking and makes sure batsmen are not bogged down. Those who have been following county cricket for a long time would be familiar with the batting of Thorpe,Gooch and others.
Nudging singles doesn't always mean playing cross-batted shot on to the leg side. Batsmen of International class should be able to find gaps without taking undue risks. Playing straight within the V will always fetch you runs.
Anyhow, my above observation regarding BD batting is a general one and not particular to this match only. In this match, you'll see about 90% of Tushars runs came via boundaries and his SR is around 45! If we could only go through his entire test and fc career so far, we would probably find the same pattern in his batting! This is certainly not the way of going about building an innings of any note! Just take a look at the FC average of our batters. You'll find very few averaging 40 or above, in fact, 20 or 25 seems to be the norm!!

Ahh okay, thanks.
By the way, I tried the BBC audio. It doesn't seem to be working. Anyone else having this problem? My internet's acting funny all of a sudden. Even the BC site is loading super slow.
