Razab bhai, you have great knowledge of the game which I respect and you make good points here but you're leaving out an important point and that's the mental part. This is a guy who refused to bat at 4 before, thankfully he changed in that regard. We can say that was a while ago though. Nope. Recently in the NZ Test series, he was asked to bat at 3 in Tests and he again refused.
I agree he has the skills to open and you described them very well but the mental aspect always has to come in to play and mentally Riyad can't open.

It may seem like an exciting thing to experiment, but it can backfire badly. If Mamodula takes 30 deliveries to get off strike and then gets out, we have twice the damage of losing a wicket and eating up deliveries. Besides it's not about nurdling and nudging for singles but playing according to our strengths. Our strength is we play best when we attack and play our shots except of playing too many shots initiating a collapse.
In fast track like Australia where batsman would run away in sniff of 300 plus runs and bat us out of the game, it is really the last option. Riyad != Amla or Yusuf
Imo, best opener combo was Kayes-Tamim southpaw combo to throw opponents off guard. Right-left Anamul Tamim combo might work but I miss Kayes.

Anamul needs a fifty next warm up game. Another single digit score and we might have to bank on Soumia.

Zeeshan, when you practice in the nets don't you play a lot of shots? Do you do the same when you are out on center? It is a misconception that our batsmen going down all guns blazing is our strength. It's a glaring weakness when you are dependent on either the bad ball or on manufacturing a shot for runs. (Here's an interesting article on WC batting: http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine...ry/509917.html).
I would argue that our batting is most effective when our batters play with calmness. Where they are rotating singles, putting the occasional bad ball away, finding gaps and then using their god-given hand-eye to play audatious shots.
And Tiger444, you are right - it's about mental. Riyadh needs to suck it and do what is right for the team. There is nothing scary about opening. Except Dale Steyn trying to knock your head off. But then again, you have Mitch and Broad coming in as first change, so not much of a gain is there?

Its not a mental thing but a very smart choice by Ryad. With the kind of record he has after hundred games.. if he batted at the top he would not have survived. The notouts helped him boost his average and lower order position meant that he never could be blamed for the losses.

I think Riyad can hit big. He's 6 feet tall and reasonably jacked as well.
The only batsman we have who can't hit big is Momin.

FWIW, Imrul Kayes has a dot ball percentage of 62% to go with his career strike rate of 65%. Hardly a strength.

Oh BTW Tiger444, I would never bat Riyadh in the top order in Tests. I should have clarified that I am suggesting opening in ODIs only.

Agree Razab bhai 100% and well that's always the knock on Riyad isn't it? He's a good talent and he's been a solid support player but he needs to start taking command as a senior. Ideally he should mentally open or come in at 3 instead of Anamul and Mominul but unfortunately he's not doing that and in the end it's why he's not a Shakib, Mushy or Tamim.

Our team would be lot more balanced if they left Riyad and his single digit 2014 average behind and picked a leggie. Suicide if they play Riyad-Nasir-Sabbir at once. Our middle order is filled with bits and pieces player. Not a single genuine middle order batsman in the 15!

Riyad is taller than 5-10. 5-11 and a half around. Very least he's 5-11. Tamim is 5-10 and riyad is taller than Tamim.
