I'd add Memphis Depay to that list and also Mathew Leckie. Leckie has impressed me way more than Cahill.

I think people are getting the hang about it. It will never be Football. However, Futbol is a start.

So now that the group stage is coming to an end, what's the plan for the next stages? Individual match threads? If so, I request Zunaid to open them since he did such a great job with the initial stage.

Of course the overall quality of the USMNT has improved over the years although it will take more time for our guys to reach the excellence of the USWNT. Thanks to millions of kids playing soccer at some level and greater, more regular coverage of the sport on cable, the game is on its way up in the country. Incredible fan organizations like The American Outlaws are also driving its popularity, more in some parts of the country than others. That said, soccer will never reach the popularity of indigenous American sports such as football, basketball or baseball in terms of their cultural significance, but I do see soccer becoming at par with hockey in the near future. Not in hockey country such as Michigan, Minnesota, the Dakotas and Alaska, but certainly in other parts especially without a championship NHL team.

Unintentionally hilarious and staggeringly idiotic column by our favorite right-wing wacko, Ann Coulter:
http://www.anncoulter.com/columns/2014-06-25.html
Choice excerpts:
"One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time."
"Individual achievement is not a big factor in soccer. In a real sport, players fumble passes, throw bricks and drop fly balls — all in front of a crowd. When baseball players strike out, they're standing alone at the plate. But there's also individual glory in home runs, touchdowns and slam-dunks.
In soccer, the blame is dispersed and almost no one scores anyway. There are no heroes, no losers, no accountability, and no child's fragile self-esteem is bruised. There's a reason perpetually alarmed women are called "soccer moms," not "football moms.""

World Cup 2014: Nigeria boycott training in money row
The Nigeria squad at the World Cup have missed a scheduled training session in a row over money.
BBC Sport understands the players believe they are each $15,000 short of the bonus they were expecting for reaching the last 16 in Brazil.
They refused to train in Campinas on Thursday and officials later confirmed the session had been cancelled.
Nigeria are scheduled to play France in the knockout stages on Monday having finished as runners-up in Group F.
BBC Sport has learned the problem lies in the interpretation of the bonus structure, with the players believing they will only receive $10,000 for their win 1-0 over Bosnia-Hercegovina and $5,000 for the 0-0 draw with Iran.
The players' understanding was they would receive a $30,000 payment for qualifying from the group.
However, it is believed the Nigerian Football Federation's offer to the players also includes the agreed win and draw bonuses plus 30% of the prize money due from Fifa for reaching the knockout stage.
This is understood to rise to 40% of the prize money from Fifa if Nigeria were to win their round of 16 match, 50% for a quarter-final victory, 60% for a win in the semi-final stage and 70% for lifting the trophy.

A ten-year European plan to gradually phase out American football in the United States and replace it with soccer is “very much on track,” a spokesman for the European Union confirmed today.
The E.U. spokesman, Alf-Jergen Holmboe, said the replacement of American football with soccer was the third in a three-step plan to transform the U.S. into a European country.
“The first two steps were electing a socialist President and instituting national health care,” he said. “Once soccer replaces football, our work will be done.”
Holmboe said that the E.U. could take no credit for the legalization of gay marriage in the United States, but called it “a very welcome development.” He added, “Once a country has socialism, national health care, and gay marriage, soccer is usually next.”

Yes, we were watching the game at the office conference room. Many commented on Prince Harry. Left at the end. At home found US 2 down. What a pity. Then the sub scores.

World Cup 2014: What's wrong with Brazil?
By Tim Vickery
BBC Sport
Monday must surely have been a great day for Brazilian cardiologists.
After the scare of the previous Saturday's second-round tie against Chile, when Brazil scraped through on penalties, the entire country felt like having a check-up.
"How much did you suffer?" was a frequent Monday morning greeting.
For Brazil's legion of admirers all around the world, one of the dominant emotions was probably disappointment. Win, lose or draw, people always expect more from the five times world champions.
They want to feel like the Argentine coach Angel Cappa, who was in Spain for the 1982 World Cup, and gleefully recalls that when he was watching Brazil "the ball arrived in one part of the field and disappeared to reappear again in the form of a rabbit and then a dove, and then hide again as the opponents rushed about trying to find it, all of us in the stadium looked at our watches with the intention of making time stand still because we wanted the game to go on for ever".
The 2014 model Brazil may battle their way through the rounds and go on to win the World Cup but they will surely not be remembered all around the world with the same affection of their predecessors from 1982, who did not even reach the semi-finals. Why not?
