New Version of ODI:Trial Match Played
New version of ODI
- August 11, 2010, 5:25 pm
Australian Cricket has trialled a new format, it hopes will revolutionise one day cricket.
South Australia and Tasmania were given the chance to test out the new split innings concept, with teams batting twice for 20 overs each.
Isiah Bogros was monitoring the match in Darwin for Northern Territory cricket, and says fans were not the only ones confused.
He says batsmen were not sure how to play in the first twenty overs, and whether it was best to conserve wickets.
Cricket Australia plans to use the new format in the upcoming domestic one day season.

CA green-lights fresh one-day format
Cricket Australia will forge ahead with its reinvigorated domestic limited-overs competition this summer after receiving the support of its Playing Conditions Committee.
Committee members Mark Taylor, Matthew Hayden, Greg Chappell, Shane Warne, Paul Marsh and CA chairman Jack Clarke gave the go-ahead for the 45-over, 12-a-side format to be trialed during Australia's 2010-11 one-day tournament.
Tasmania and South Australia played under the new rules for the first time in a trial in Darwin last week that saw the Tigers triumph by six wickets with more than eight overs to spare.
CA chief executive James Sutherland said that the nation's cricket fans had called for a facelift for what was otherwise their favourite format.
"We have listened to the public, undertaken comprehensive consultation across Australian cricket and developed a format which we now want to test thoroughly this summer," he said in a statement.
Under the new system each team will bat for 45 overs split into innings of 20 and 25 overs, but power plays have been abolished.
Bowlers can have a maximum of 12 overs each and fielding teams will receive a new ball from each end at the start of the innings, but will receive no further new balls.
In the first five overs, only two men may field outside the circle. Between overs six and 20, that number increases to four, before reverting to two between overs 21 and 25 and then back to four outside the circle for the final 20 overs.
The new format also means teams can bat and field any 11 of the 12 players on their side, with 10 wickets per team.
A first innings lead will be rewarded with one point, regardless of the outcome of the game, and four points will be awarded for a win.
A maximum of five competition points is available if a team leads at the first innings and goes on to win.
Sutherland said fans had called for a mixture of action and tactics, combining the best elements of Twenty20 and Test cricket.
"The fans told us, through formal research, that they like all three formats, there is a place for three cricket formats," he said.
"They like ODI cricket best, but they want to see it refreshed and they want to see it with a short-form identity that is distinctively different from fast-emerging T20 cricket.
"Interpreting the data, fans see Test cricket as the formal, long-form strategic game; they see T20 as a bite-sized piece of cricket entertainment and they think ODI cricket sits in the middle as, in a sense, a strategically-based, one-day Test match."
He recognised that the changes may not be well-received by all cricket fans, but the format deserves to be given a chance.
"I confidently predict plenty of public discussion over summer - but we clearly need to do something to refresh the world's most popular format," he said.
"We have listened to the public, consulted throughout cricket, and now want to give this format a thorough trial to test it out before longer term assessment about whether this might become an international format."

australia cricketers irked by new one-day format - unionreuters, 14 august 2010
melbourne (reuters) - australia's cricketers association has slammed a trial shake-up of the domestic one-day game, saying there had been no consultation and that the new format based on split innings was difficult to comprehend.
In a radical departure from the conventional 50-over cricket, australia will trial a 45-over game for its 31 domestic matches this season, with teams playing two innings of 20 and 25 overs, in a bid to stem flagging interest in the shorter format.
Governing body cricket australia (ca) put the new format down to a response to the demands of fans, but the australian cricketers association (aca) said it had disappointed players.
"the decision by ca to trial the split innings format in this year's domestic one-day event was made before collective player input was even sought," aca chief executive paul marsh told local media on saturday.
"for the people that play and know the game better than anyone, this process has been difficult to comprehend and players are very disappointed.
"they acknowledge that the one-day format has had its recent challenges and as a collective they want to help those running the game find the best solution.
"however, the players don't believe the split innings format is the best solution."
the new format, which allows bowlers 12 overs rather than the conventional 10 and awards points for first-innings leads, has been welcomed in other circles, however, with india's sachin tendulkar voicing his support.
"i am glad it's being tried out in australia. I feel once the players have tried out this format, they will be in a better position to judge if (it) works or not," he told indian media.
"today, we can tell the result of close to 75 percent of matches after the toss. ... But (splitting the game into two innings) is not too dependent on the toss because, (if) it's a day-night match, then both the teams will have to bat under lights."
