Good Idea. I always thought calling each other "bhai" or "apa" is a feudal way of practice. May be this practice is a part of our "semi feudal" culture? May be it is an etiquette or conventional rule of decorum within south asian folks? I don't know. But in my view, the best way to honor and acknowledge an "individual" is to call him/her by his name....not necessarily it has to be bhai apu or even dr.

Interesting post Nascer. Sign me up. I've always been less than comfortable with the 'automatic respect' aspect of our culture.
I was more vehement in my antagonism in my younger age. Now I've mellowed a bit- not because I'm on the recieving end of the 'respect' but, because of all the social and economic ills in Bangladesh, the curse of the 'automatic respect of elders' idoes not seem to be that high on the list after all.
Still, I'm on your side of the issue. All my friends call me by my first name. I'm still working on the cousins, half of them instinctively add 'apa' to my name. I respond by calling the juniors 'bhai' and 'apa' in return, which seems to help break them of the habit.
So, Nascer, with regard to the following:
Quote:
I respectfully decline to call anyone anything else but by their names.

You may call me Feroza any day.

Sure. On this board, which is a virtual environment, it is ok if we do not use Bhai/apa. However, in real life I will stick to my cultural upbringing, which is to call anyone senior to me (in age) as chacha or bhai.
Cheers.

hey give me the \"bhais\" and the \"apas\" any day
I like 'em...makes me feel comfortable and at home...I always thought of them as "endearing" after all you are trying to establish a relationship with a person by giving them the status of a brother or sister etc. etc. never thought of it a "semi feudal" culture...

haha! So is calling people auntie or uncle is feudal too? No, but I understand what you mean. I am not a fan of using or being called apa/bhai for the very reason pompous cited. Having to give someone an 'endearing' status even though you'd rather not!
